"content": "Where Poo Comes From<br /><br />(A short story by Jeremy Lott)<br /><br />The other day, my two-year-old son Huckleberry tugged at my sleeve.<br /><br />“Daddy! Daddy!” Huck said.<br /><br />“What?” I replied in a distracted way. I was trying to write something on deadline. It was about funding for roads, if you must know.<br /><br />“Where does Poo come from?” he asked.<br /><br />Well, that got my attention. I looked at the clock on the wall. I thought about maybe pleading that Daddy really has to get this done, why don’t you go ask Mommy?<br /><br />But I still had three hours until the article was due. It was over half way written and all the research was done.<br /><br />Plus I had been ignoring Huck a lot lately in favor of my screens. I felt a little bit guilty about that.<br /><br />You know how it is. You love your kids but there are so many distractions.<br /><br />“Are you sure you want to know?” I asked him, in my Daddy-is-very-serious voice.<br /><br />“Yes! I want to know where Poo comes from,” he said.<br /><br />“Well, we all eat food right?” I asked.<br /><br />“Yes?” Huck said in a questioning way.<br /><br />“We put food in our mouth and we chew it good, so we don’t choke, because choking is bad,” I said.<br /><br />“Yes Daddy, but...”<br /><br />“And that chewed up food goes through a tube called the esophagus into our stomach,” I interrupted him.<br /><br />“OK, but...”<br /><br />“Then our stomach breaks that chewed up food down further with acid and passes it through other things, but mostly our intestines.”<br /><br />“But I don’t...”<br /><br />“Let me finish,” I said.<br /><br />He looked like he was wanted to say something more, but stopped butting me.<br /><br />“The chewed up, broken down food goes a long way through our large and small intestines. Did you know you have over 25 feet of intestines, almost as long as a school bus, in that small space?” I asked him.<br /><br />“Wow, that’s a long way,” Huck said, rubbing his belly.<br /><br />“Yes, that is a long way. And what happens in those intestines is that the body takes all the stuff it can use out of that chewed up, broken down food and puts it to use in our bodies, or digests it. That’s why it’s called the digestive system,” I said.<br /><br />“But Daddy, I don’t see...” he started to say.<br /><br />“Let me finish. I’ve almost got this out,” I said.<br /><br />“Now our bodies cannot digest everything. There’s stuff left over and the solid part of that chewed, broken down, undigested food has to go somewhere. So our intestines pass that on to our colons and our colons move that further along. We sit on the toilet and maybe grunt a little bit and get rid of it. And that’s where Poo comes from.”<br /><br />Huck was quiet for a minute. He looked deeply unsatisfied with my answer and I wasn’t sure quite why.<br /><br />I could tell that he was really thinking about what to say next. Finally, he opened his mouth and asked a question.<br /><br />“Daddy, where does Tigger come from?”",
