"content": "Mueller lied to Congress about his reason for holding the unexpected press conference back in May. Unsealed court documents now show that Mueller held the press conference to avoid contempt charges by the judge in his case against the Russian troll farm. <br /><br />Judge Friedrich found Mueller violated Rule 57.7, which prohibits lawyers from expressing opinion that would prejudice a case, but Friedrich emphasized that “a violation of a standing court rule does not involve the same affront to the court’s authority as would a violation of a specific court order directing a party to take or refrain from a particular action.”<br /><br />Friedrich also said that contempt “should be initiated only as a last resort,” and only if parties violated the rule “willfully,” which did not occur here.<br /><br />The judge cites Mueller's press conference as a reason for not holding Mueller in contempt. Friedrich said the government’s statements “amount to a single violation” of court rules. Contempt proceedings, the judge said, generally should be reserved for “repeated and flagrant abuses” that show disregard for the courts.<br /><br />“In this case, nothing about the government’s conduct to date suggests a flagrant disregard for the court’s authority,” Friedrich wrote.<br /><br />The judge said she “remains confident that any prejudice can and will cured through the passage of time, voir dire and jury instructions.”<br /><br />Thats no longer true after Mueller's testimony to Congress. Several times he violated the judge's court order and he lied to congress about why held the press conference after it.
