But they must make some stops on their journey to rest and refuel, and now with more and more of the wetlands on their route being ‘reclaimed’ (eg seawalls being built in China and South Korea) the birds can no longer stop - so they fly on exhausted and many just don’t make it. It is estimated that some species have declined by 80% and others are already extinct. <br /> <br />Hearing about this on an ABC radio series, I could not get it out of my mind. We think, because we still see and hear birds, that it’s ok - they’re still around.
