I wanted to capture how those trips felt to me as a kid, in the style of the comics I grew up loving. Through a child’s eyes, even a backroad can feel like outer space.<br /><br />Now, I’m fixing that truck up so I can take my daughter on adventures of her own. Australia just had a first: a man lived over 100 days at home with a magnetically levitated titanium heart. No valves, no gears, just a single rotor floating on magnetic fields. No friction, no mechanical wear.<br /><br />The surgeon who designed it lost his dad (a plumber) to heart failure. Now he's building something durable and (eventually) cheap enough to last a lifetime for people like his dad. It runs on swappable 4-hour external batteries. If it were me? I’d alter the battery hookup to take the Dewalt 20Vs that I’ve got a bunch of on chargers in my garage.<br /><br />The heart adapts to activity, with enough output for an adult man to run a marathon. I’d love to see the raw output data. We’re probably 10–20 years out from at-home advanced metal 3D printing, but it’s coming. Give it a couple decades and you'll be able to print classic car parts, like a U-joint or a tie rod arm right, in your garage. Or guns, that too.<br /><br />Just look at how far at-home 3D printing with resins and plastics has come in the last decade. Since 2014, the cost of entry-level 3D printers has dropped by at least 60–80%, with some decent machines now going for under $200. The tech is getting cheaper, faster, and better.<br /><br />Hopefully one day soon, buying a home metal printer will be as easy as picking up a welder or sandblaster at Harbor Freight. Think of it this way: touch screens used to be science fiction. Got picked up on a flat bed and hauled to my brother-in-laws machine shop. We had fun over the weekend and knocked out a full front-end overhaul:<br /><br />• New master cylinder & booster<br />• Custom hard brake lines (bent & flared by hand)<br />• Full front brake rebuild—rotors, calipers, pads, soft lines<br />• Rebuilt 4x4 lockers<br />• New axle seal & wheel bearings (front driver side)<br />• Removed a kinked hose, replaced fuel filter, and removed a 3rd in-line fuel filter that was choking power<br />• Fixed lights (brake, turn, hazard)<br />• Resealed valve covers<br />• Rewired trailer brake controller<br />• New 10-ply all terrains (the ones I had were delaminating going down the road)<br /><br />Rear brakes are next. Truck’s finally stopping and pulling like it should 💪😎. I am so thankful for all the help, and that I learned so much. So, I saw JoAnn Fabric was having a going out of business sale, and we picked up a computerized sewing machine for 62% off. <br /><br />I think the last straw for me was looking at a pretty dress for her to wear to church. I was in the Clackamas Town Center and went by a boutique kids clothing shop. A dress for a two year old was $130. Hell no. They have not gone away. I have a CT scan and some other tests coming up. If the results are as expected, I'll need a minor surgery, which I have mixed feelings about. <br /><br />I am on spring break for a week. Ill spend the first half finishing a Raspberry Pi project. After that the ball joints, U-joints, steering arms, brake booster, and other parts arrive for my 78 F-250. I will drive it to my relatives shop, and we will tear it down to the guts.
