After becoming ill in October for a few days I was busy working on Part III of my series Documenting the Radical Left and planning an international trip. But you know what they say, if you want to make God laugh...Make a plan. <br /><br />For those of you just joining in, here is Part II of the Rona Chronicles: <br /><br /><a href=\"https://www.facebook.com/1154517220/posts/10224435977544376/?d=n\" target=\"_blank\">https://www.facebook.com/1154517220/posts/10224435977544376/?d=n</a><br /><br />Warning, this is a graphic story...it’s not for everyone. On October 19th, I was all set for spending some time out of the country for awhile. I had celebrated my “last night“ in town with friends and family before driving back to my hotel. I felt fine. The next morning I woke up energized and ready to go. Sometime around 11 am something strange happened, I was pooping blood. Not a little, but a lot. I didn’t feel ill, but I felt that sinking feeling in my stomach that this was not something I could ignore. I was going to have to postpone my trip and reroute my adventure instead to the hospital. I got my hotel room extended, made arrangements for my dog, and drove myself over. <br /><br />Upon entering the emergency room my heart was beating so fast, I didn’t know what was wrong with my body, and worse, yet, didn’t know who to trust. There was a Rona station set up in the entry way. I was told to toss my mask, get a new one and sanitize my hands. Did all of that and checked in. I waited in the emergency room waiting area in my own little square with a chair and plexiglass. <br /><br />By the time I was seen and asked to produce a stool sample I was losing massive amounts of blood and they decided to admit me for observation. The ER nurses were all fine, but as soon as I got upstairs things changed. <br /><br />A nurse came in and casually said she needed a swab from me. I asked her if that “swab” was a Rona test and she said yes. I declined the test and she left. Several nurses entered my room and told me the Rona test would be required for the colonoscopy I needed to determine the cause of the bleeding. <br /><br />I have done a lot of inner work around fear, including the fear of death, but this was one I didn’t count on…the fear of the “new normal” within the medical system. I looked them in the eye, knowing I was losing massive amounts of blood with every bowel movement and said, “No, I do not consent to the test.” They asked me why, obviously waiting for me to say something they could classify as crazy or conspiracy related. I said politely that I didn’t have any symptoms related to the Rona and if it wasn’t for the unexplained anal bleeding, I wouldn’t be there at all. <br /><br />They left and a doctor came in. He explained that if I refused the test they would treat me as a positive patient and use a special room set aside for those patients before for my colonoscopy. He mentioned something about droplets. I said okay and he seemed surprised and perplexed. Wasn’t I afraid to be in the same room used by positive patients? Why wasn’t fear working?<br /><br />He left and I had a rough night of worry and heavy bleeding. The next day, early in the morning more nurses came in. They explained, again, why I needed the Rona test. One nurse mentioned the added cost of prepping a room for a positive patient. I asked if these precautions were now standard because of the virus, she said yes. So, what was the problem? Another said there was a PPE shortage. I said “Really?” Her response was that they could refuse to do the colonoscopy unless it was an emergency. I pointed over to the bedside commode filled with blood and said “See that? Looks like an emergency to me.” <br /><br />They left and more nurses and doctors came in. Some with gloves. Some without. Some with the masks pulled down below their noses. All so concerned about me testing for the virus. Despite threats to treat me like a positive patient, they never did. They scheduled the procedure to discover the cause of my bleeding regardless. A nurse came in right before the procedure to check on me. Any fever? Headaches? Shortness of breath? Her seemingly innocuous questions a ruse to trigger a test. I wasn’t experiencing any of those things, so I answered truthfully and no Rona test was administered.<br /><br />Some of the staff seemed hostile to my refusal to test, while one nurse told me that I was smart to refuse. She told me they get paid for positive cases, and she feels badly for those who test positive as they were treated poorly. She mentioned that some of the unionized nurses who had disciplinary actions for patient abuse were allowed to get their licenses back because of the Rona due to the shortage of nurses. She also stated how patients could walk in with mild symptoms and be dead in days.<br /><br />Throughout the entire 4 day ordeal, I ended up having 2 colonoscopies and required a blood transfusion from all the blood I lost. <br /><br />In the procedure room for my two colonoscopies I saw some nurses in full PPE and some in standard gear. At one point, an anesthesiologist came into my prep room to administer what was suppose to be “heavy sedation” (not general anesthesia) with no mask and no gloves! I had my blood transfusion line in at the time, and he used his bare (ungloved) hands to mess with my lines (the ones actively going into my veins) for the medication. He couldn’t get it to do what he wanted, apparently, because he eventually just took out the tube giving me the blood transfusion, and inserted his medication tube (which ended up being the general anesthesia I had adamantly NOT consented to) instead. <br /><br />Ultimately, I experienced multiple forms of harassment, possible medical malpractice, altering of medical records and other medical trauma. My crime? Not consenting to a Rona test. Holding on to my beliefs even during a life threatening situation and advocating for myself.<br /><br />I brought all of this to the attention of the charge nurse and social worker at the hospital. Coincidently, right before two people came in to take my complaint they sent in a nurse to give me a powerful painkiller (stronger than morphine). The nurse and I discussed my situation briefly and how I wanted to be clear headed for my meeting. She agreed with me and decided to administer the medication later if it were needed. She even went as far as telling me in front of them that the situation was serious, and she wanted me to have a clear head to answer questions. Thank you to the good nurses out there!<br /><br />The bleeding stopped on day 4 and I demanded to be discharged that day, as soon as I spoke with the social worker and made my complaint. None of the tests or CT scans could determine why I started bleeding. Nor could the doctors explain why it stopped just as suddenly as it started. <br /><br />I left on my previously planned trip two days later… slowly getting back to normal ever since. Like anyone who has experienced a trauma, I keep finding myself asking the tough questions like, “Why did that happen to me?,” “Was I meant to go through that to help others?,” “What am I suppose to do with all of that grossness now?”<br /><br />Like I said, I’m still coming to terms with it all, still processing, and finding my way back to carefree self. But, I will say that I am so proud of myself for staying true to what I believed, even when it was all on the line. I faced the Rona and medical system fears head on, and I did not buckle or make a choice that was out of alignment with my values. In some small way, I hope that alone can be enough to help others out there to stay strong in their own challenges.<br /><br />Each day I feel stronger. I am taking time to allow myself to fully recover, mind, body and spirit. I thank you all for your support…sharing all of this helps me feel less alone and, like I said, my hope is that you will be encouraged to live through your traumas with boldness and perseverance. I will continue to persevere in this…I will use my voice, my rights, and my freedom to hold the people who abuse power accountable for their actions.",
