Con drop not bad at all this year. I may have more thoughts, but here is my initial impression.

I role play. almost exclusively. in the past, I would sign up at conventions to 4, 4 hour games, thus spending 16 hours per day pretty much without food (except snacks that I could carry) in order to maximize my total play time. not this year.

instead, I took a much more relaxed schedule that involved.
2 \"scheduled\" games and 1 \"home\" game, where the home game was pretty much sitting down with the friends that I came with and played a RPG together.

it was great! wonderful actually.

the games that I managed to get in included:
- pathfinder 2e
- Shadowrun 6e (2 hour demo)
- Shadowrun 5e (2 hour demo)
- Warhammer 40k
- Star Wars Edge of the Empire
- Savage Worlds Deluxe Edition (SWADE)
- Torg Eternity
- outbreak: undead
- DCC RPG - 0 level Funnel

the \"home\" game included:
- my friend running us through some Edge of the Empire scenarios, and I ran my friends through a one-shot of Shadowrun on the last night involving great quantities of Whiskey.

The good:
- pathfinder 2e
- outbreak:undead
- Star wars Edge of the Empire (scheduled game)
- all the shadowrun

the bad:
not really much bad. in years past, there was always a couple of truly horrible games. this year, DCC RPG was the least good one - simply because the GM running it seemed to have forgotten that a 0 level Funnel should involve LOTS of PC's per player and lots of PC death. in this game we only had 1 PC per player with a crazy rule of if you die in game, you can roll a contested WIS roll to \"take over\" another Players PC to do something with that player - utter crap! never take over a PC of another player that way.

some quick thoughts:
the con:
its great! big, yet still MUCH smaller than Gencon. you can walk around, actually walk into players in the vendor halls etc that you gamed with prior and remember faces. not as much crowding in the vendor hall either. however I sure do miss the size of the vendor hall and the variety of stuff at gencon. one other small con is that Origin's doesn't take over Columbus quite like Gencon does Indy - once you leave the convention center is pretty much business as usual and its trying to compete with Pride weekend. not a huge deal.

The games:
- I really tried to make a concerted effort to assess shadowrun 5e to 6e by playing a demo game of both. having not every played any version of SR - but was super excited to see 6e release I was hell bent to pick up the beginner box and play some games. SR6 feels good to me. i like the Edge mechanic, I like that the skills feels more simply than 5e. I like the simplified stats. while this all may not remain true once the core book came out - it was VERY easy to grok 6e fast, while 5e, took a lot of explaining in-game to get to throwing dice. I admit that old SR Grognards may feel that everything I said as a pro is in fact a con :)

- Pathfinder 2e was surprisingly good! like, really good! I'm a 5e player. I never played PF 1e. did play a smidgen of 3.5 back in the day. here's what I like: super flexible character creation options that seem to be fully based on feats. unlike D&D, where you select a class and at higher levels a \"specialization\" which comes with a pile of pre-determined benefits - in PF, it seems like you can select feats to tailor your character however you see fit. the 3 action economy was REALLY good! lots of choice at the table during battles. I felt strong but I also didn't feel like I could simply rest and cast forever with minor drawbacks. the death/dying rules are also neat in that unlike 5e where you really can yo-yo up, down, up, down, in PF2, your chances of rebounding from a killing blow gets progressively harder the more it happens.

- Outbreak: undead. god this is a crunchy game. god this is a baroque game. god is this game difficult to parse when reading the rules. oh man do I love this game! the potential here to simulate a survival horror is quite unlike anything I ever experienced before. it truly felt when we were playing like we were in a survival game desperately fighting for our lives. actions were brutal not because we were bloodthirsty but because if we didn't out savage the savages, we would be the ones dying on the side of the road. this is the game I most want to run with the least likely chance of ever finding players willing to invest the time and energy to figure the rules out.

- finally, notable mention goes to SW: EofE session. in it, we played elite troopers from the 501st legion. it was a hoot getting to play stormtroopers, and being \"bad\". it was a solid military game in a scum and villainy setting. we got to kill a bunch of Hutt's. it was really fun and the GM was top notch.

before, I was most likely going to jump in on picking up SR and PF core books in August, now I am certain of it.

#gaming #rpg #ttrpg #geek",
