"content": "I took my youngest child to see a musical stage version of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory last night. I had never seen the movie, though I read Dahl's books as a child. After coming out of the theater, I have to say that my reaction to his work hasn't changed much since I was a kid. He is an inherently melancholy writer, and the happy endings feel like something imposed by his editor, acting on market appetites. In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the subplot involving the grandparents in the same bed is unsettling, like a parody of a gerontocracy mixed in which commentary on poverty. It is also weird, to modern eyes, to see the kids get mangled one by one in the chocolate factory itself (though I acknowledge there is an element of dark farce here, which once was common in kids' stories, and should not horrify us). Every child succumbs to his or her own character flaw, which feels very Christian and Victorian. These children are experiencing something like predestination.<br />As for this stage version, it was fine in the first Act and then fell apart after the intermission. The lengthy scene involving the invisible room should have been cut entirely, and the whole thing felt too long. The most obvious fault was the ambiguous nature of Willy Wonka himself, who comes off as eccentric, sadistic, generous, brilliant and obsessive all at once. This bundle of contradictions worked somewhat in the book, but is utterly unsustainable on the musical stage, where characters must be broad and accessible. ",
