"content": "This reMinded post is true. Jesus repeatedly told the Jewish Pharisees that they were of \"their\" father (the devil), not His Father. The Jewish Pharisees and Rabbis have since mostly been a \"den of vipers,\" in full opposition to God and His word.<br /><br />I work with a Jewish person that likes to talk about it, and I had to give her a piece of my mind one day.<br />Apparently Jews believe that their most important value/command is \"preservation of life (their life).\" They believe that they can break any of the 600s \"commandments\" if their life is at risk. That doesn't sound as bad until you understand the horror of it in its full context. Remember that these Jews believe in the same scriptures that Christians call \"the Old Testament.\"<br /><br />If the most important command in the Jewish scriptures is \"preservation of (one's own) life,\" then what about the commandment \"you shall have No other gods before Me\"? Does \"preservation of self\" being put before obedience to God Not put oneself AS god over God? I would assert that it does.<br /><br />What about the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego when they defied king Nebuchadnezzar's command to worship a golden image (over God) [Daniel 3]? They were called to obey God to the point of death by being thrown into a fiery furnace; yet they lived, and were used to prove God's authority to Nebuchadnezzar, leading to a change in worship [Daniel 3-4].<br /><br />What about the story of Daniel in the lion's den? They banned worship of God over the king, Daniel violated that order by worshipping God, and he was thrown into a den of lions [Daniel 6]. God saved Daniel for His own glory in Persia during the time of king Darius.<br /><br /><br />Even more strongly, what about Genesis chapter 22 where God tested Abraham by calling him to sacrifice Issac (the son of his promise) by giving him up to God? It was only at the point when Abraham was about to sacrifice Issac that God's angel stopped him and showed him the ram for the sacrifice.<br />That scripture was a foreshadowing of God sacrificing Jesus for us, except He did Not spare Jesus the way He spared Issac. Jesus was the sacrifice because He was perfect, and was fully God and fully man. Jesus only resurrected because he has the power to defeat all \"our\" sin that sent Him there, and dispose of it there (because He is perfect, and perfectly God).<br /><br />There are many other cases in the Jewish scriptures that prove that God's command is \"you shall have No other gods before Me.\" That \"no other gods\" very much includes the false-god of self and resultant self-preservation. God's will is for us to \"die to self\" (and the will of self/self-preservation). Only those that are willing to put God's will above/beyond their value of self follow His word.<br /><br />Dare I risk being put on some assassination list, I'll say this: Anyone that is Jewish that believes themselves to be able to break even 1 commandment for the sake of self preservation (or especially because they choose to) are in direct violation of the first and most important commandment \"you shall have No other gods before me,\" and are of \"their\" father (the devil) and not of the true Father (Yahweh). "content": "Another cautionary response-post...<br />If we were judged based on what we do to make this world better... Heaven and the New Earth would be vacant of humanity. What we do to make the world better is always dwarfed by the magnitude of what we all mess up or miss the opportunity for. You think you can make it into Heaven on your own? Show me you can do everything perfectly for even a single week. The very first time you fail/fall-short is worthy of a death sentence, and here's a few of the rules to fail...<br /><br />Jesus himself says this: \"You have heard that the ancients were told, 'You shall not commit murder,' and 'Whomever commits murder shall be answerable to the court.' But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be answerable to the court; and whomever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be answerable to the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell;\" (Matthew 5:21-22).<br />Also (Matthew 5:27), \"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery;' but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.\"<br />Who can be judged favorably by what they do for even one single day by those standards? That level of judgment would certainly apply to the other commandments also. I can't last a single day on this level of standards! What am I to do? What are we to do?<br /><br />Every religion or worldview Other Than Christianity erroneously promotes the first part, and misses the point on the second. Only Christianity focuses on the second, because of the recognition that No One can do the first \"well enough\" on their own.<br /><br />That said, the true \"born again\" Christian's understanding, of just how far they hopelessly miss the mark on being judged by their works, should influence them into being more sacrificial in their good works. "content": "This is a strongly-cautionary response to \"self-trust\" that is without caveats, conditions, and qualifications.<br /><br />From personal experience, over-trusting in oneself can lead to as big of problems as not trusting... because \"blind trust\" can cause internal problems to grow unnoticed for a long time. My blinding self-trust almost ended up with me not surviving what I put in my own way (in 2 separate and somewhat unrelated ways, both before 25).<br /><br />The first was sleep mismanagement (sleep is not for the weak, as the memes joke about). One always needs to self-check while driving and evaluate one's alertness, and stop if uncertain (obviously). I pushed my limit and ended up going off-road; a couple hundred yards after a bridge that had a steep embankment on either end, with not-inviting trees at the bottom, in a mostly rural area, and at night when no one would notice for a long time. \"Someone\" kept me straight just long enough to dodge this bullet (I was driving alone btw).<br /><br />The second (which partially worsened the first) was a spiritual issue (one that would best be left for another time). This, being the worse of the two, continued until my misplaced self-trust shattered, leaving me crashing into my Creator's will for me to survive, even when I was literally praying for extraction from this life in general. I was ready to \"tap-out\" and \"throw in the towel,\" but He had other plans. I did Not survive this by self-trust. I wanted to take the easy-way-out like Robin Williams did. "content": "This was how he grew in spiritual strength and nobleness!<br /><br />(Alexander Smellie, \"The Hour of Silence\" 1899) <br /><br />\"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others!\" Philippians 2:3-4<br /><br />Did Paul live a depressed and dismayed life, because he was perpetually denying himself out of love for others? Not at all. The very reverse is true. This was how he grew in spiritual strength and nobleness!<br />The discipline prospered his own soul.<br />It gave him wisdom and insight.<br />It gave him courage and endurance.<br />It gave him sympathy and considerateness.<br />It gave him deep restfulness and glowing joy.<br />By it he gained inward vigor, and the glow of spiritual health, and spiritual life in its fire and force and fullness.<br /><br />And this was how he won the hearts of men and women. US, and Our rebellious sinfulness; and the source of our healing... Him and His drawing us into humble obedience to His perfect will.<br />What is sin? Isn't sin just all things \"not of God\"? (Pardon the first few out-of-focus seconds.)<br /><br />We are at FL360 (36,000 ft), and the CRJ900 above me is at FL380 (38,000 ft). The typical temperature of the air is -50s C year-round, worldwide, and the exhaust gasses exiting the engines shown are many 100s of degrees C (more than 700 C). The 2 trails form from the engines, and take the time from the tailpipe to what looks like about 50-75 feet aft of the aircraft to shock-cool to the dewpoint and condense into a cloud. Soon thereafter the exhaust will mix with cold air to the point of freezing to ice particles. The mixing is accelerated by the churning wake from the wings and their wingtip vortices.<br />(Heavy-jets, larger Boeings and Airbuses, will have a 2-stage contrail... a denser, more long-lived contrail [per engine] from the engine core spinning the air into a horizontal tornado, causing a local decrease in air pressure, decreasing the dewpoint; and a thinner, shorter-lived contrail shell around each of them from the core air that mixes with the low-speed bypass fan air.)<br /><br />The cold air temperature is what makes contrails last so long, because solids are much harder to sublimate into a gas than liquids are to evaporate. Even so, they do, and will dissipate into surrounding dry air. Humid air will maintain them for days, and very dry air will sublimate them quickly. This air is moderately humid, and it lasted as far as we could see as this jet leapfrogged us. (We both departed from close airports, but they climbed faster, and were able to claim the higher altitude well before us. We eventually climbed to their same altitude as they zoomed along.)
