The Intentional Decay of NYCHA, why, because if the decay is so terrible, the city would be forced to look for financial help somewhere else. The Federal Government has been cutting back funding for years, and the State Government too. So where does the city go for help? You got it! They go to developers.<br /><br />In today's world, our trusted governments cannot be trusted as in the past. Then again, we should never have trusted government. And that is why the answer to fixing NYCHA problems is YOU! Yes, you, the public. Since our leaders are unable to find the door, we must fix problems ourselves. That's where Louis Flores comes in. Louis has been fighting battles for years, going back to trying to save Saint Vincents Hospital. He now sets his eyes on helping those that live in NYCHA Housing. The city has plans to demolition two building that is part of the Robert Fulton Houses, in Chelsea. Those buildings would be replaced with three taller buildings, and then the buildings would be managed by developers under the Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD).<br /><br />RAD is something Obama signed into law to help protect tenants of Public Housing, but it ain't so. When buildings are converted into the RAD system, building rules change, and a higher rate of people seem to be evicted, 10% higher in some places, rents also rise. In the case of the Robert Fulton Houses, 70% of the buildings would become market-rate apartments. Actions like this will destroy Public Housing as we know it. And the public must stop it. And with help from Bill de Blasio, this now also includes NYCHA.<br /><br />Because of decades of neglect, Mayor Bill de Blasio's is considering turning over parts of Robert Fulton Houses to private developers so developers can demolition two buildings and replace them with three new taller buildings. The new apartments will be marketed between 70 percent market-rate units and 30 percent affordable. But will the current residents that will be displaced be able to afford living there?<br /><br />The project would be part of the federal Rental Assistance Demonstration program, that would convert the buildings into Section 8 apartments. The mayor plans will convert 62,000 NYCHA apartments over ten years.<br /><br />Council Speaker Corey Johnson is the council member for the district the Fulton Houses reside in, and he has offered no help to the residents. From Amazon to pro-developer rezonings to jail proposals, we have seen again and again the Mayor’s intention to destroy the city that we love.\n \nBut momentum has been building and now is the time to fight back - it’s not too late!\n \nPlease join us for a Two Bridges TOWN HALL to learn how to fight against these towers!\n \nNO TOWERS, NO COMPROMISE\nCoalition to Protect Chinatown and the Lower East Side\nTOWN HALL\nWhen: Dec 12, Wednesday at 6pm\nWhere: P.S. 2, 122 Henry St (at Pike St)\n \n*Despite being approved by the City Planning Commission, these towers are ILLEGAL. \n \nCPC Chair Marisa Lago said before her vote in favor of the application that legally the minor modification meets the conditions of the current zoning regulations.\n \nBut the proposed site for development is a \nLarge Scale Residential Development (LSRD), governed by Zoning Resolution Article 7, Chapter 8. There is no need for a full ULURP since these towers violate the existing zoning. The Zoning Resolution governing the LSRD requires that any proposed development get a special permit from the City before construction begins. The development would be approved only if it will:\n \n1. Not interfere with the character of the neighborhood\n2. Not restrict light and air or privacy\n3. Not Introduce detrimental building bulk\n4. Not create traffic congestion\n5. Serve a public need\n6.
