On most diets, I found myself listless, ravenous, crabby and frankly obsessed with food, or the lack thereof. Also, I rarely lost any significant weight and usually gained back anything lost and then some. Turns out, I have the kind of metabolism that loves to store energy and hates to release it. In the presence of any carbohydrates, I will not lose weight even if I’m eating under 1200 calories a day.

On a Keto diet, everything is opposite. After the first week, I lose interest in food until the late afternoon, which makes intermittent fasting (18 hours) a cinch. When I do eat, I’m inclined naturally toward smaller portions. I lose, on average, 1/2 Lb every 5 days (not counting the initial 5Lb dramatic loss, which is motivating, but also largely water). I don’t know how many calories I consume, because I have no need to track them. Also, the weight stays off - as long as I don’t stray too far into the realm of sugar and bread.

I’ve pretty much lost my taste for sweets. I do like good fatty deserts on occasion, when I’m not in weight loss mode, like crime brûlée and cheesecake. But candy, Starbucks flavored drinks, cupcakes and the like no longer interest me. I find them somewhat disgusting to tell the truth. I’d much rather eat fruit - grilled peaches and baked apples in particular - with cream.

I followed a strictly Keto diet for 6 months starting last November. I lost 15 Lbs. I maintained that loss for 6 months on healthy diet that included rice (sushi!!), corn tortillas (tacos!!) and the occasional slice of gluten free toast. In other words, not Keto, but also not a Standard American Diet. It being November again, seems like a good time to start Phase III. I still have 10 Lbs to lose to reach a “healthy” weight. I expect this to take about 100 days, but I’m committed to going a full 6 months.

Apologies about the bad music in the video. I recommend watching it with the sound off.
