"content": "Unsurprisingly this NYT piece echoes the War Party line on the Syria withdrawal. The author complains about Iran and Russia gaining influence, but such articles never ask why those countries are involved in Syria in the first place.<br /><br />In early 2012 Obama's CIA started a program to arm Syrian rebels code-named \"Timber Sycamore,\" ultimately giving them hundreds of millions of dollars in weapons through operations rooms in Jordan and Turkey. Many of those weapons ended up in the hands of Islamist head-chopper wackos, and, in at least a few documented cases, ISIS.<br /><br />After more than three years of this, using US-supplied shoulder-fired rockets to plow through Syrian tanks, the rebels were making significant gains in the north, through Hama and up into Idlib. Not extremely far away from Tartus, where Russia keeps its only Mediterranean naval installation.<br /><br />It was only at that point that Russia or Iran got directly involved in the conflict--in 2015--after countless millions were poured into the opposition by the US, Turkey, Saudi, the Emiratis the Israelis, et al., with cooperation from the Jordanian GID in distributing the weapons. <br /><br />Without that support the war may have ended years earlier, saving tens of thousands of lives on all sides. Neither Russia or Iran would have had to come to Assad's rescue in that case, and the Islamic State may have been denied another battlefield, where such groups gain experience and enjoy easy access to arms and fighters.<br /><br />The Imperial Press will never tell this story all in one place, even if their own reporting backs it up in bits and pieces.
