Congress defined it in law, and did not empower any federal agency to redefine it, expand or contract the definition of it, or otherwise do anything beyond enforcing the statues related to the manufacture, transfer, and possession of machine guns. The Department of Justice is endeavoring to take on the role of Congress by extending the definition and forcing items that satisfy the limitations established by statutes passed by Congress to suddenly be considered illegal contraband. This is a dangerous precedent, and one we absolutely must not allow to pass unopposed.<br /><br />To put it in the most simple terms - Congress established the definition of machine gun and told ATF to enforce the law. This is why bump stocks have been legal, and also why shoe strings were once determined to be machine guns. As funny as some of ATF's rulings may be, they have always stayed in their lane and attempted to carry out their mandate of upholding the letter of the law. This proposed rule would be a paradigm shift from Congress writing gun legislation and voting to pass it, to the Department of Justice arbitrarily rewriting the law to suit a political agenda, and then having the power to enforce their agenda with the force of law.<br /><br />If the Department of Justice is allowed to redefine clearly written statutes to make bump stocks into machine guns, there is nothing to prevent them from doing the same thing to binary triggers, or going all in and deciding that all semi automatic firearms are now machine guns.<br /><br />The rule is not yet live on regulations.gov, but it should be tomorrow. I will update with links when they are available. We have 90 days, starting tomorrow, to file comments. There will be legal challenges to this rule, and the comments filed will no doubt be considered and weigh into that process.<br /><br />You don't have to like or own bump stocks to see that the executive branch must not be allowed to unilaterally and arbitrarily rewrite federal firearms laws. If Congress is taken out of the equation, we are one presidential election away from Australian style disarmament. <br /><br />Not mine but worth sharing",
