"content": "Sometimes either the Author or the Publisher comes up not just with an idea for a book cover, but even supplies the photos that can be used on a cover. In the case of Dariusz Rozwadowski's book \"Piłkarskie bagno\" (\"The Football Swamp\") I was supplied with a self-made photo by the Publisher that he wanted to be the main piece on the book cover. The situation was a bit tricky regarding the photomanipulation, as the Publisher used photo filters on the phone to modify the photo and the resulting file was too small to provide a good quality for cover printing. "content": "Some time ago I have dipped my toes into the world of Amazon's print on demand service by creating my first low content book, \"The Carnivore Journal\". The goal was to get familiar with the process and the system itself, and see where the pitfalls might be.<br /><br />Overall result was quite satisfying. The photo used on the cover did not change colors much when converting from RGB to CMYK, white text on black background is sharp and readable. Also, I had a chance to print copies using two different Amazon markets (UK and Polish) to compare the results. Surprisingly, the two books are very consistent with each other. The trim is within tolerance (there is about 1 mm difference, which is quite good) and at the first glance the colors look identical. Only the trained eye will start to see some minor differences when comparing the two print runs long enough. However, I have seen big brand products on store shelves with much more vivid color discrepancies. "content": "While it doesn't happen very often, sometimes I do work exclusively with graphs, tables, and illustrations for the book, not even touching the book's layout. In the case of title \"Klimatyczne oszustwo\" (a book about global warming / global cooling / climate change / etc.), the Publisher asked me to adjust the original's front cover to fit the Polish size requirements and of course information in Polish language, but the main task was to update the images used inside.<br /><br />While the cover had only the text modified, the images in the interior required extensive work to make them of higher quality than was used in the original. The files supplied and used in the German original were many times of low quality, copied from websites (in small sizes and low resolutions, fit enough for computer screen, but not for print), scanned from old books and documents, with clearly visible fuzziness and pixelation. Because of that, multiple techniques had to be applied to achieve required quality.<br />To begin with, most illustrations and graphs had to have their descriptions translated into Polish, including even small changes like replacing dots with commas in units of measure (as these differ in between languages). Some graphics had to be recreated entirely, some were successfully upscaled. For some I was able to find originals, as within the German version of the book some images were used in smaller sizes.<br /><br />In the end, each and every image required an individual approach, as some were quite easy to retouch, while the others took hours to make them print-worthy. "content": "The cover for Sławomir Suchodolski's \"Czarna księga sanacji\" (\"The black book of sanation\") was my first out of three book covers dealing with this specific topic and by this Author. As compared to the other two, this one is more serious in tone, and the design reflects that.<br /><br />The Publisher's wish was to somehow combine the two photos showing on the front in a meaningful way. Creating a Polish flag themed fields (white on top and red on the bottom) allowed for a very efficient distribution of space between images. Top picture was very high quality which allowed to use it in its full size, without any distortions. However, the bottom image was much smaller and could not be used without any alterations that would hide its bad quality. Luckily, due to the scene depicted which has an ominous theme to it, putting it on red background and blurring it significantly allowed for increase in visual quality, as well as for conveying its dark theme.<br />The typeface used was very appropriate for this specific cover, as it was created and popularized at the same historical period as the events described in the book took place. "content": "The second tome of Sławomir Suchodolski's book \"W krainie sanacyjnych absurdów\" was a no less interesting challenge to take, however a bit different from the first one. For this book cover there already was a theme set by the first one, so the task at hand was to create something that was in the tone of previous book, without repeating its design exactly. Again, the style of Terry Gilliam's work was very helpful, resulting in something more abstract than previous design and similarly satirical.<br /><br />This time the initial concept came fully from my side, because many factors like the previous design, Author's preferences etc. were already known, which allowed to dive straight into creative process. The overall feel was supposed to resemble the works of Monty Python's Terry Gilliam and his collage's and animations. "content": "This one is again one of the older covers of mine, and I remember being quite happy at the time to be finally able to use for design a typeface that is designed to look like a result of using an old typewriter. The title text is broken and dirty, the baseline has fallen apart. It conveys the spirit of the times, dirty and chaotic, as all of the communism was and is. The book itself had an updated edition released straight away, as the information during the plandemic was constantly being updated and overall situation changed rapidly for the worse with displays of extreme government interventionism.<br /><br />I am quite fond of this design, despite it being never used for the cover. The idea behind it was that the governments around the globe purposefully created a situation sometimes referred to as \"anarcho-tyranny\" (more appropriate term would be just \"tyranny\"), where regular people are being punished for simply existing, while the statists can (and do) freely commit acts of evil on the defenseless populations. This kind of situation gives rise to minor and more localized warlords, who through the initiation of the use of force are able to restrict people's access to the basic necessities (food, water, toilet paper...), and then extract valuable goods and services from those in need.<br /><br />Eventually the publisher decided to take a conservative approach and use the original cover design from the German edition. "content": "Many times designs come out right straight away, and the cover for \"Crypto For Beginners\" was such a project. I do appreciate crypto, especially the promise of Bitcoin Core that it had in the past, so I was quite eager to jump on this one. When the crypto market was still fresh and unsaturated, by far the most easily recognizable crypto branding was Bitcoin Core's logo and orange color. This gave ma a running start for the idea for the cover design. The notion of a \"wallet\" to hold one's crypto also came in handy, and that way everything came together as a coherent piece. The typography is calm and balanced, allowing the image to speak in much louder tone.<br /><br />Important technical detail was that the design was supposed to stay digital, to be viewed on the screen only, never touching the printed matter. The importance of the final medium for this design comes into play due to limitations of today's printing process, which in its most popular form (four color printing) causes many times the vivid and well-saturated oranges (as well as other colors) to come out dull and unappealing. The book's title, \"Manifest nowego libertarianizmu\" (that can be translated as \"Manifest of New Libertarianism\"), is a play on Samuel Edward Konkin III's \"New Libertarian Manifesto\". It is a collection of three texts dealing with the topic of agorism. The idea was to depart from a bit overused imagery applied in all sorts of business books and create something that would stand out from the crowd. The Milky Way visible in the night sky symbolizes both designating one's own path as well as the ability to dream big and setting bold goals for oneself. One of the very few requests that the book Author had was to put his photo onto the book cover and luckily he supplied an image that was showing more than just his portrait, so it could be creatively incorporated into the design.<br /><br />Due to the nature of the project (competition, with extremely short time to complete, and minimal feedback from the Author) there was no option of refining design any further. "content": "Agata Jurkowska's book about carnivore diet is a side project of mine. The author have shared online her manuscript in PDF, which gave me a good source material to work on, in turn creating layout and cover design. I took some initial inspiration from Shawn Baker's book \"The Carnivore Diet\", and adapted it for specific requirements of European printing setups. I also have decided to use my own hand-drawn illustrations, so there is some ornament, which serves to break the \"sterility\" of the page.
