There are a lot of things that you need to think about when you are buying a used car, and a lot of people overlook them.Everybody tells you to have a mechanic (not your friend) look at a vehicle before you buy it. Here are a few things you should seriously consider when purchasing a used vehicle.

Have a lien check done. I cannot stress this enough. You never know when a vehicle was sold by somebody who needed the money, and was willing to risk the buyer finding out there's a lien on it. You may not think that 18 year old truck has a 15 year old loan still attached to it. You could be very wrong. Like I was. I bought my truck (1998 GMC) in May of 2016. I didn't bother with a lien check - who would still have a loan out on it from 10+ years ago? Apparently somebody does. I wrote my truck off last month (somehow it broke 4 wheel studs, blew all the brake parts off and the wheel came off while I was driving - albeit only 40km/h so nothing crazy happened). ICBC gave me my total loss payout information, and then they told me there's a lien on it from 2003.

Now I'm fighting with the bank who owns the loan to find out if it's valid or a clerical error. Do not let an old loan that is not even yours come back to haunt you. In British Columbia, where I live, it is not the registering company's responsibility to ensure a vehicle that's sold has a clear title. The debt stays with the vehicle (ICBC does not do a lien check when transferring the title) and follows whoever owns it. I loved my truck - my son absolutely adored it, I'm sad that it's gone, and now I might be stuck owing a lot of money on a debt that I never asked for.

Book a mechanic to inspect it. I've been working on vehicles for 15+ years, I am very comfortable with inspecting things myself - if only because I can repair/replace just about anything that goes wrong with it. There are still times I kick myself for not having a real mechanic look at a vehicle. They will do a compression test, brake inspection, check for error codes, and a whole host of other things that most of us don't even think about.

Get the carfax, get as much information as you can about it. Go to your insurance company (ICBC for us BC folk), pull the accident history - find out if it's had any serious accidents. If the vehicle you want has passed hands several times, the last couple of owners may have no idea about it's history. Don't get burned buying a lemon that's had it's frame straightened or other serious repairs that could still leave lingering problems.

There are so many other points I could bring up, but use your judgement when buying used. Take it for a good drive, if you're really interested in it and ready to buy it - invest in a mechanic and record searches. Finally, trust your gut instinct. If something gives you a bad feeling, don't go for it because it's a good deal.

",
