"Sunset on Mount Hood in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. This picture was taken from the 3rd-floor veranda of the home I rented up that way for a number of years until about 18 months ago.

It was a great time being in such an amazing natural place as this, but daily reminders of man's encroachment through the irresponsible management of resources was the other side of the coin I observed. The logging trucks would begin barreling down the hill next to my residence beginning at 4 am on weekdays and activate their Jake Brakes just as they got to this part of the last few miles slope down the White Salmon Gorge in route to the Columbia River level and Hwy 14, one after another for hours. The \"National Forests\" have imho been turned into outdoor monoculture tree farms at best. They are unhealthy due to their lack of plant and animal biodiversity. They even have small herds of cattle with GPS tracker tags that they allow to roam the slopes of Mt Adams where I solo camped regularly. These cattle were the predominant animal I saw, by far. I observed very few other forest creatures to the point of being extremely eerie during my dozens of adventures in the Gifford-Pinchot National Forest around Mount Adams.

Worse than that was the Columbia River, a dead body of water full of pollutants from several thousand miles of towns along the sides of the Snake and Columbia Rivers, many dumping sewage with reckless abandon and almost all dumping agricultural pollutants into this once mighty and pristine river. No fish jump across the surface chasing bugs as evening comes each day, something I have witnessed hundreds of times on other bodies of water in the US. No schools of small fish can be observed darting around in the shallow coves. Hood River, across the Columbia River from where I lived, is just one example of why, as the city is permitted to dump whatever it wishes in the river due to some \"small town\" environmental waiver, but worse, does not even have to monitor or keep track of what it is dumping, AT ALL! This is criminal when multiplied a thousand times up and down the banks of our waterways. They say now to only eat the fish from the Columbia River twice a month!. How is it that we have come to a place in this world to accept as normal and ok that the fish are so toxic that we cannot eat them more than 24 times a year?

A case could be made that this is some sort of passive-aggressive genocide against indigenous populations of people, some of which use to derive most of their meat protein from Columbia River salmon, no? At best it is creating a dependence for everybody on grocery store-provided foods, many of which with a fraction of the nutritional value of natural meats and organic heirloom crops.

The Columbia also once was very mighty before we turned it into a bunch of relatively low flowing lakes with hydro-electric dams the last couple hundred miles of its flow. We covered the Dalles and the Cascades nearby, dynamic river features, and now only have towns named after these now underwater mighty river features of which a few photos still exist. 95% of the salmon caught by recreational fishermen in this region are from the US fish hatcheries. if we eliminated the fish hatcheries, there would be virtually no salmon left. The dams are an aberration to nature's flow and a mistake, imho.

I will stop there. Although it was a beautiful stay up there, I saw and learned a great deal, not all of it good.

On a more positive note. The White Salmon River is a small victory of sorts for nature though regarding the Condit Dam, as within 5 years prior to my moving there to within 1/2 mile of the Condit Dam, it was deconstructed and the river was permitted to flow freely again. This was one of the first major dam removal projects undertaken in recent years with more planned in the near future.

Vince Talkz
and talkz, and talkz, and talkz.....

and takes a few great pictures from time to time

Don't Forget the Z for Zanney!

http://VinceTalkz.com

Support my efforts by having cool stuff delivered to your door.
https://vince-talkz-gear.creator-spring.com/

(I love Minds Token donations as well!)
-
#myphoto #outdoors #photography #volcano #mountians", "to": [ "https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#Public" ], "cc": [ "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/782640809957662728/followers" ], "tag": [], "url": "https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/1225437087009914880", "published": "2021-04-04T13:37:02+00:00", "source": { "content": "Sunset on Mount Hood in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. This picture was taken from the 3rd-floor veranda of the home I rented up that way for a number of years until about 18 months ago. \n\nIt was a great time being in such an amazing natural place as this, but daily reminders of man's encroachment through the irresponsible management of resources was the other side of the coin I observed. \n\nWorse than that was the Columbia River, a dead body of water full of pollutants from several thousand miles of towns along the sides of the Snake and Columbia Rivers, many dumping sewage with reckless abandon and almost all dumping agricultural pollutants into this once mighty and pristine river. \n\nA case could be made that this is some sort of passive-aggressive genocide against indigenous populations of people, some of which use to derive most of their meat protein from Columbia River salmon, no? At best it is creating a dependence for everybody on grocery store-provided foods, many of which with a fraction of the nutritional value of natural meats and organic heirloom crops.\n\nThe Columbia also once was very mighty before we turned it into a bunch of relatively low flowing lakes with hydro-electric dams the last couple hundred miles of its flow. \n\nI will stop there. Although it was a beautiful stay up there, I saw and learned a great deal, not all of it good. \n\nOn a more positive note. The White Salmon River is a small victory of sorts for nature though regarding the Condit Dam, as within 5 years prior to my moving there to within 1/2 mile of the Condit Dam, it was deconstructed and the river was permitted to flow freely again.
