I figure that if I keep increasing by 30 to 50 pounds, work on that until it hits 405 or right above, this may be the best path forward to hit the goal.<br /><br />I'm 43 now so am running out of time. If anyone has thoughts on a better way to reach 405, I wouldn't mind hearing them. I have been stuck at a 315 max on bench for a long time - I just couldn't seem to get past it. My issue was definitely in the hole (bar goes down and touches the chest). I have always hated paused presses but decided to start doing them because that is obviously where my weakness was at. Before this I had tried a combination of heavy and light work.<br /><br />In a matter of roughly a month and a half, I am up to doing sets for 345 - 350. 225 x 17, 305 x 5 etc. <br /><br />If your weakness is pressing from the hole, give these a try. I started at 3 x 8 at 225. It was a struggle but I finished without a spot. The next week, I did 3 x 8 of 235. These were actually pretty easy. The following week, I was on vacation, so the one after that I did 3 x 8 of 245. The previous week, I did 3 x 8 of 255 and needed a touch on the last rep of the last set.<br /><br />This week, I took extra time due to a tender spot in my right chest, but was able to do 305 x 5 with a possible additional left in the tank.
