READ THE FOLLOWING IF YOU WANT TO MAKE SENSE OF THINGS. Let's start with the gist of the article:

π. \"...Alexander Dugin, a Russian philosopher who is an ultra-nationalist close to Putin, is believed to have been the intended target. . . Darya (the daughter) was a prominent journalist in Russia who vocally backed the invasion of Ukraine. In an interview in May she said the war was a βclash of civilisationsβ...\"

π. Ok, so now a few things worth pointing out.
1) First let's deal with Dugin himself:

1.1) Putin and Dugin had some kind of a falling out in the past few years. Meaning, he's no longer a central figure in Putinistan. That said, one of his books is still on the Russian army indoctrination list β and for a good reason. Putin is a Chekist (nickname for KGB pigs). He knows how important indoctrination is in the army if you need to have a loyal power that won't undermine the dictator (Stalin made this into an art form to the point where prior to WWII, soldiers and officers spent more hours being brainwashed in classes than shooting guns, as their performance in the first few months of WWII clearly showed). So why would Dugin be on the indoctrination list? Well...

1.2) Dugin is certainly not an \"ultra-nationalist\" β saying such a thing means one of two things:
a) whoever wrote this article is yet another sucker brainwashed by internationalist Leftism with zero understanding of what nationalism is.
b) whoever wrote this never read anything by Dugin (unlike yours truly).
Obviously, the most likely answer is both.
OK, with that out of the way, what is Dugin?

1.3) Well, Dugin is a third grade wannabe philosopher. A Bullshit Artist if you like. Basically he's a 'Make Russia Great Again' type, or more accurately, 'Make Russia Tsarist Again'. Meaning, he's calling for reestablishing, in one form or another, the Russian Empire. This is why calling him a nationalist of any kind is idiotic. Nationalists cannot, by definition, be imperialists. Imperialism is INTER nationalism overriding the right of self determination. i.e., COUNTER nationalist (there's a reason why the rise of nationalism brought the end of empires).
Anyway, Dugin at some point ate the \"member-berries\", decided what the end result should be and worked his way back from there.
Dugin's line of \"thinking\" is basically a regurgitation of the views of late 19th century Eurasianists and early 20th century British geo-politicians with post-modern \"there is no truth\" generously sprinkled on top. Only instead of just quoting those geo-politicians directly, he takes what they said, puts it in a bullshit blender and spreads it over quotes by other philosophers and tries to hide the nonsense with the cunning use of very long words, endless rants, and random name dropping. To sum up his views β there's an eternal ideological war between what you might call the Atlantians and the Heartland. The reason is that they come from different geographies, and different geographies forge specific cohesive cultures, and cultures are the true fundamental human unit encompassing national and religious identities which is why the entirety of Russian Eurasia needs to be under Russian control (because reasons). In the case of the \"islanders\" (i.e., land masses beyond the \"World Island\" of greater Eurasia and Africa) β they have the Liberal culture, which is the most awful thing ever. Why? Well, Dugin basically quotes word for word the craziest and most unhinged of post-modern neo-Marxist agitators' critique of liberalism and in the same breath also quotes the craziest and most unhinged western traditionalists' critique of liberalism. Two views which aren't only crazy and unhinged but also complete opposites that cancel each other out β but contradictions aren't a problem if your writing is convoluted enough and wording inflammatory enough. Anyway, to make a really long story short, Dugin is REALLY REALLY dumb to a frightening degree. Calling him \"Putin's Brain\", as some do, is probably the greatest insult you can throw at Putin. But Dugin can indeed be associated with the attack on Ukraine as he actively called for it. Although again, instead of just quoting Mackinder and his assertion that whoever commands Eastern Europe (i.e., Poland/Ukraine) commands the Heartland (i.e., Russia), and showing the devastating effect Hitler's take over of Ukraine had on Russia's ability to defend itself, he just creates a philosophical mishmash and historic revisionism to justify it.
To sum it up, Dugin is associated with a neo-colonial assertive Russia opposed to the West and with Putin himself, and thus a symbol.

Which brings us to the main point of it all:

2) Sending a message without pushing Putin into a corner:

2.1) The story mentions the increasing amount of attacks behind Russian lines. These attacks are not just tactical in nature, preparing for a Ukrainian counter attack and weakening the Russian war machine, but also strategic on a military-political level. After proving to Putin the superiority of Western intelligence, now Putin gets an indication of Western covert operators. The reason I say they are Western and not Ukrainian is because this level of attacks coming from within the Ukrainian security services would've been promptly uncovered by Putin's own intelligence services. We've all seen that Ukraine is compromised at the highest levels of government and military. Sure, Ukrainian partisans are operating there, but even then, they are most likely fed with information and tactics from the West (think of the French and Polish undergrounds in WWII as sort of an example).
Sorry Ukrainians, you've proven you're brave and resilient. But you've also proven how compromised you are at the highest levels. Anyway, these are military signals to Putin and not just tactical operations. Military targets are obviously easily justifiable in a war. Soft targets like Dugin, not so much. So, something else is afoot. To clarify:

2.2) Sending politicians a direct threat, especially dictators like Putin that happen to sit on a pile of nukes, require a sensitive escalatory approach slowly moving up the food chain. If you were to target actual government officials or people truly within Putin's circle, that would push Putin's back to a wall and would merit a big ass gif of \"that escalated quickly\". It's basically aiming straight to the head. Usually, rules of engagement say you first shoot a warning shot in the air, then you shoot at the legs, and only then shoot to body mass, or shoot to kill.
Targeting Dugin, or maybe on purpose his daughter is basically shooting in the air. \"If we got to him, we can get to you\" if you want. So that would be the case for a Western attack on a soft target like Dugin. Targeting high level politicians and close associates in such an obvious overt way would give Putin a reason to mobilize, and once that happens it will cause a chain reaction inevitably ending with a hot World War.
That said, since Putin is no stager to false flags, and this might very well be an attack to tarnish Ukrainians as nothing but terrorists (after all, it was literally a form of terrorism) deserving of the worst possible treatment. Also, the same logic applies here as it did in the last paragraph. Assassinations have historically been used as justifications for strong military responses. And this just might be Putin preparing Russian patriotism for a justifiable mass mobilization. Especially since the victim wasn't Dugin who's a bit obscure for everyday Russians, unlike his daughter. Which leads me to one final side point worth making:

2.3) Saying that Dugin's daughter is a Russian journalist vocally supporting the war isn't saying much. That's pretty much the definition of a Russian journalist now. If you don't support the war you will be off the air faster than you can say Gulag...

https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/daughter-of-spiritual-guide-to-putins-ukraine-invasion-killed-in-moscow-car-bomb/

...",

But you've also proven how compromised you are at the highest levels. Anyway, these are military signals to Putin and not just tactical operations. Military targets are obviously easily justifiable in a war. Soft targets like Dugin, not so much. So, something else is afoot. To clarify:\n\n2.2) Sending politicians a direct threat, especially dictators like Putin that happen to sit on a pile of nukes, require a sensitive escalatory approach slowly moving up the food chain. If you were to target actual government officials or people truly within Putin's circle, that would push Putin's back to a wall and would merit a big ass gif of \"that escalated quickly\". It's basically aiming straight to the head. Usually, rules of engagement say you first shoot a warning shot in the air, then you shoot at the legs, and only then shoot to body mass, or shoot to kill.\nTargeting Dugin, or maybe on purpose his daughter is basically shooting in the air. \"If we got to him, we can get to you\" if you want. So that would be the case for a Western attack on a soft target like Dugin. Targeting high level politicians and close associates in such an obvious overt way would give Putin a reason to mobilize, and once that happens it will cause a chain reaction inevitably ending with a hot World War.\nThat said, since Putin is no stager to false flags, and this might very well be an attack to tarnish Ukrainians as nothing but terrorists (after all, it was literally a form of terrorism) deserving of the worst possible treatment. Which leads me to one final side point worth making:\n\n2.3) Saying that Dugin's daughter is a Russian journalist vocally supporting the war isn't saying much. That's pretty much the definition of a Russian journalist now. If you don't support the war you will be off the air faster than you can say Gulag... \n\nhttps://www.lbc.co.uk/news/daughter-of-spiritual-guide-to-putins-ukraine-invasion-killed-in-moscow-car-bomb/\n\n...",
