The \"back\" door led to a little covered porch and exterior metal stairway, and had a deadbolt lock. Between the \"back door\" and our bedroom were the kitchen, short hall, bathroom off the hall, and living room.<br /><br />Over and over (at least three times that I can remember and probably more, it seemed like it was once every week or two for several months), we would be in bed and start hearing a noise from the living room. It sounded like a fairly quiet cocktail party -- low multiple voices in indistinct conversations, clinking glasses, light jazz music.<br /><br />Each time, when one of us got up and opened the bedroom door, the noise instantly stopped, there was nobody in the living room (or elsewhere in the apartment), and the back door slammed shut quite loudly. Except that the back door was ALREADY shut and locked with both the regular lock and the deadbolt, and had been for hours.<br /><br />We never found a plausible explanation. This was always in the middle of the night when the neighbors (all of whom were quiet anyway) were fast asleep.<br /><br />I didn't really believe in ghosts until that happened, but I've never been able to come up with any other explanation.
