All the cars photographed were driving correctly.

I have labelled two positions.

Position A. This is the position I cycle in. It is to the left of the road.

Position B. This is the position from what a gather the cyclists on youtube are saying is best.

If you are on a moped or motorbike you should be in position B. In the centre of the road. When I did my CBT training we were told to be in the centre.

But on a bike I believe you are far safer on the left, or position A.

If you cycle on the left of the road (Position A) cars can pass you with ease. If you look at the photographs, car drivers will in most cases leave a gap on the left. So even if they do not see you, they may still pass you. Also cars can move around you with ease.

If your in the middle of the road (Position B) you are putting yourself directly in line with cars. As such your more likely I would suggest to have a car run into you. You are also making it much harder for cars to get around you and so your increasing the problems where a car may clip you when passing. It is also forcing cars to move further out and possibly onto the other side of the road.

If you are in position A or the left of the road, you can simply go forward and pass cars as you go up to the lights. You are staying in a straight line.

If you are in position B or the centre of the road and you come up to cars at the lights, you have 3 options. 1. Stay where you are, behind the cars. 2. Move left, and go to the front. 3. Go right and go in between the two sets of cars at the lights. 2 and 3 mean you are moving all over the road and this is poor road cycling. Remember you are not on a racetrack but cycling on a road. Cycling all over the place increases the chance to have an accident. Also if you take option 3 and go in between the cars, the lights may change before you get to the front, increasing the chance of being clipped by a car.

I am not sure if you can see the cyclists in the last photograph. I was on the wrong side of the road. However they are in position A or on the left of the road. Cars are passing with ease. Cars are not having to break or move out to get around. Everybody is a happy camper.

One thing some have said in youtube films is that they cycle 3 feet away from parked cars in case someone opens a door. Considering most if not all drivers check before they open the door as they do not want a car to hit there open door, the chance I would suggest of this happening is very slim. I have been cycling for years and never had someone open a door. But, one thing to note is I cycle at a safe speed. I cycle at a speed that if I need to I can manover or break. If your going so fast that if someone did open a door or walk in front of you, then your probably going too fast. Remember, your not on a racetrack.

",

They seem to want a confrontation with drivers.

So I am putting this list together of how I believe cyclists should behave on the roads. Well this is how I behave anyway.

1. Single lane cycling.

I do not care if the law lets you cycle side side with other cyclists. Cycle in a single lane. Cycling side by side makes it almost impossible for cars to pass you. Your more likely to be hit by a car as it try's to pass you.

The ONLY reason I can think cyclists want to cycle side by side is to be a jerk and make cars stuck behind you.

2. Let cars pass you.

If your on a road where cars cannot pass you, and you are holding up the traffic. Pull over, and let the cars pass. Its the decent thing to do.

3. Watch out for cars turning left.

This is for UK traffic where we drive on the left.

If your cycling along cars do not always see you because of blind spots. And yes, sometimes they are not looking. But watch out for cars turning left, slow down. If need be let them turn. Do not try to force your way past as you may end up colliding with the car.

In one youtube film a red taxi indicates left and starts to turn. The cyclist shoots past and collides with the taxi. While the taxi should have stopped, one must not presume the taxi driver could see the cyclist. Cyclists need to watch out for these things happening. If need be, stop, and let the car or in this case taxi turn left. And yes, some people may say the cyclist by law has the right of way, however just make life easer on yourself and others. Simply stop and let the car go, then get on your way.

4. Watch your speed.

Some modern bikes can go fast. But your on a road, and not a racetrack. What is important is can you stop? What if someone walks out in front of you, are a car foolishly pulls out. Can you stop in time?

5. Stop wasting police time.

On a lot of youtube vids, one chap seems to cycle in the middle on the road, and when a car passes him, he gets all hissy and screams out the car reg and insists he is going to report the car. "content": "https://youtu.be/iKrNCOlcA_4\n\nCyclists Stop Being Jerks\n\nThis is my little rant for today.\n\nI have been watching a lot of youtube films where cyclists are uploading films of shaming drivers who they believe are bad drivers.\n\nThese films seem to be mainly London, but I am not 100% on the location.\n\nIt seems that some cyclists have a chip on there shoulders. They seem to want a confrontation with drivers.\n\nSo I am putting this list together of how I believe cyclists should behave on the roads. Well this is how I behave anyway.\n\n1. Single lane cycling.\n\nI do not care if the law lets you cycle side side with other cyclists. Cycle in a single lane. Cycling side by side makes it almost impossible for cars to pass you. Your more likely to be hit by a car as it try's to pass you.\n\nThe ONLY reason I can think cyclists want to cycle side by side is to be a jerk and make cars stuck behind you.\n\n2. Let cars pass you.\n\nIf your on a road where cars cannot pass you, and you are holding up the traffic. Pull over, and let the cars pass. Its the decent thing to do. \n\n3. Watch out for cars turning left.\n\nThis is for UK traffic where we drive on the left.\n\nIf your cycling along cars do not always see you because of blind spots. And yes, sometimes they are not looking. But watch out for cars turning left, slow down. If need be let them turn. Do not try to force your way past as you may end up colliding with the car.\n\nIn one youtube film a red taxi indicates left and starts to turn. Simply stop and let the car go, then get on your way.\n\n4. Watch your speed.\n\nSome modern bikes can go fast. But your on a road, and not a racetrack. What is important is can you stop? What if someone walks out in front of you, are a car foolishly pulls out. Can you stop in time?\n\n5. Stop wasting police time.\n\nOn a lot of youtube vids, one chap seems to cycle in the middle on the road, and when a car passes him, he gets all hissy and screams out the car reg and insists he is going to report the car. Yet in many of his vids, it looks like the car is not that close. So while if a car does run into you, or gets very close, or the driver drives in a threatening way. Is it really worth shaming every driver going?\n\n6. Stop the road rage.\n\nOn a lot of the youtube vids the cyclists seems to get in road rage. Such as chasing up to the driver. Shouting at the driver and so on.\n\nIf you have a bad experience, do not get into road rage.\n\nFor a start you or your bike may get hurt, or you may end up hurting the driver. Things can escalate. \n\nJust let it go.\n\n7. Be more understanding.\n\nIn most cases drivers are not bad people.\n\nHowever people make mistakes.\n\nOne thing I was taught was presume the worst. By this I mean do not presume drivers will not make mistakes. So give people room. Do not presume anything.",
