"content": "One Brave Catholic Priest in Italy
\"I, Don Domingo Ariano, define myself as a Zionist.\" This is how the pro-Israel Catholic priest from Rome wishes to begin his exclusive interview with Makor Rishon. A charming statement, some might say touching, but not one that warrants a newspaper headline. After all, how many pro-Israel Catholic priests are there in Italy? Dozens? Hundreds? Thousands? No, no, and no. Following Pope Francis's recent statements against the State of Israel, where he claimed that the IDF isn't fighting against Hamas but is acting cruelly in Gaza, only a few priests have mustered the courage to oppose their spiritual leader and condemn his pro-Palestinian agenda.

\"In my church, my positions are not accepted,\" reveals Don Domingo. \"The day after the massacre on October 7, I participated in a rally in support of the State of Israel – something that caused an uproar in the church. I was immediately summoned by my bishop. He reprimanded me, told me he was very ashamed of my opposition, of my pro-Israel views. I am now an absolute minority in the Catholic Church in Italy, but I continue my work and am not afraid of being rejected. I am faithful to my truth, and I blame the Holy See for its lukewarm stances, at best. Pope Francis has made too many mistakes in the last year, and he has long ceased to fulfill his diplomatic role.\"

As mentioned, Don Domingo Ariano is a Catholic priest born in 1994 in Padua, raised in Bari, and currently living in Rome. Despite his young age, he has already been ordained as a presbyter in 2021. Since October 7, Don Domingo has noticed an escalating trend regarding the harsh attitudes of the Church towards Israel and the Jewish people and decided to no longer remain silent. \"The political line of the Holy See is a two-state solution for two peoples, but this is completely theoretical and not practical in any way,\" he explains. \"The Pope also talks about the disproportionality of the Israeli response to the Hamas threat, but what would he do if they were shooting at the Vatican? Wouldn't he defend his people?\"

Yes, Francis's role is to speak of peace, there's no doubt about that, but it seems that the leader of the Roman Church does so only when the Jewish state is the attacker, not the attacked. His hypocrisy has caused a stir multiple times in the last year, reaching its peak on October 7, when he sent a heartfelt letter to all Catholics in the Middle East suffering from the war, addressing only the residents of Gaza. \"I am with you, the exhausted residents of Gaza, who are in my thoughts and prayers every day,\" he wrote. A month later, he called for an investigation into Israel to check if the war in Gaza was actually a deliberate genocide.

\"The use of the word 'genocide' is awful, but that's not all,\" says Don Domingo. \"Unfortunately, just a few days ago, I had to hear from a group of Catholic priests a sentence that horrified me. 'It's a pity Hitler didn't finish the job,' they said. I heard it with my own ears. These are not isolated outbursts. The anti-Zionist, anti-Semitic, and anti-Jewish positions of the Church today are overt and declared. I myself have had countless discussions with my fellow priests and was surprised to discover their level of ignorance on historical issues. Most believe the distorted version that Israel conquered the Holy Land to oppress the minorities living there.\"

The pro-Israel priest also wants to present his theory that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism in essence. \"The purpose of every state is to ensure freedom of worship for the people living within it,\" he explains. \"I say this because Islam is well-protected by many Muslim states. Christianity also has a state ensuring its freedom of worship for its believers. If we all agree on this, the third largest monotheistic religion should also have a political entity safeguarding its freedom of worship. This is, in fact, the State of Israel. If you do not support the existence of a Jewish state, you effectively do not support the freedom of the Jewish people to realize their religious identity. Hence - anti-Semitism.\"

At the beginning of the month, Pope Francis was seen praying before a statue of the infant Jesus wrapped in a keffiyeh. The image went viral, once again highlighting the Pope's true political stance. \"It would have been more appropriate to wrap Jesus in a tallit since he was Jewish in every respect,\" notes Don Domingo. \"The Pope's highly publicized prayer is a result of a basic historical ignorance prevalent in the Church today. If priests are teaching that Jesus was Palestinian, how can we expect things to be different? If we don't know we have Jewish roots, how can we even define ourselves as Christians?\"

Like other Christians who support the Jewish state in its war against terror, Don Domingo doesn't define himself as a Zionist out of goodwill, sympathy for Israel, or love for the Jewish people, but out of self-love and deep concern for the future of the West – with the simple understanding that the IDF fights in the name of the free world. \"The West in general, and the Catholic Church in particular, are undergoing a severe identity crisis,\" he emphasizes. \"If the West does not rediscover its roots, Christianity is doomed. Without values and roots, it's much easier to conquer us, and in fact, that's exactly what's happening. We are surrendering, and Islam is conquering us. This isn't just a political or security issue, but first and foremost an identity issue.\"

At the end of November, Italian media attacked Ruth Dureglo, the former president of the Jewish community in Rome, when she said in an interview that \"the Pope is giving legitimacy to propaganda against Israel, thereby fueling anti-Semitism.\" Her pointed words went viral on social media and were summarized in a partial and provocative statement: Italian Jews accuse the Pope of anti-Semitism. In her defense, 93-year-old Jewish author and Auschwitz survivor Edith Bruck wrote in an article published in \"La Repubblica\" – Italy's largest newspaper – \"Instead of dealing with Israel, the Pope should deal with the rising anti-Semitism in our country.\"

\"Do I think the Pope is fueling anti-Semitism? Yes, I definitely share this impression,\" boldly declares Don Domingo Ariano, but immediately adds a caveat: \"I am not saying he does it intentionally, but I think his ambiguity is not the approach of an experienced diplomat, of a true peacemaker. All these half-sentences, half-statements said about the genocide in Gaza and all other delicate humanitarian issues, only cause damage and distance any chance of peace. Anyone who truly wants to bring peace must speak clearly and take a clear side. Otherwise, it's better to remain silent.\"

(Makor Rishon)",
