For years the battle in the Pacific raged before the U.S. Navy was able to make enough space to get men on the ground in East Asia.<br /><br />By 1944 Allied forces began to link up with resistance fighters and formal recapturing of New Guinea and the Philippines began.<br /><br />Part of the American Forces were made up of the U.S. Army’s 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment.<br /><br />The 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment was a segregated United States Army infantry regiment made up of Filipino Americans from the continental United States and veterans of the Japanese Invasion of the Philippines. Formed and activated in Camp San Luis Obispo, California, The 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment were given the opportunity to take the fight back to the Japanese In 1944 they were deployed to New Guinea and The Filipino soldiers served mainly as Special Forces advisors and frontline scouts. <br /><br />In 1945 the 1st Filipino Infantry Regiment got its chance to join major combat operations in the Philippines against the Japanese. Including participation in the Luzon Campaign and the retaking of Manila from the Japanese.<br /><br />The Filipino soldiers knew a direct attack on the Japanese position would be near suicidal and helped the American forces create diversionary attacks in the days leading up to the battle. Filipino resistance fighters conducted sabotage operations in southern Luzon attempting to draw away as many Japanese soldiers from the hills as possible.<br /><br />on 9 January 1945, codenamed S-day. more than 70 Allied warships entered the Lingayen Gulf.<br /><br />The landing forces faced strong opposition from Japanese kamikaze aircraft. The escort carrier Ommaney Bay was destroyed by a kamikaze attack, while a destroyer and several other warships were also sunk. Aircraft from the 3rd Fleet assisted the landings with close air support, strafing and bombing Japanese gun positions.<br /><br />All over the island battle erupted as the sky and land burst into gunfire. Eventually, Allied forces would establish a beachhead and marched on Manilla. The Japanese attempted to slow the advance in Manila by destroying all the bridges and solid roads. <br /><br />The Filipino and American soldiers refused to be deterred and immediately began driving the Japanese from the city. In the following weeks intense hand to hand room to room combat with rifles, pistols, swords, machetes and knives would take place. Eventually, the Filipino and American soldiers would stand victorious.<br /><br />Military casualties in Manila alone totaled 1,010 Americans, 3,079 Filipinos and 12,000 Japanese. <br /><br />By March the Allies had taken control of all strategically and economically important locations of Luzon. Fencer<br /><br />My KrabiKrabong teacher is Kru Pedro Solana at Muay Thai Sangha Chiang Mai Thailand<br /><br />At this event, I was representing the Academy of Jeet Kune Do ScienceS, and we were matched up with students from En Garde Fencing<br /><br />It is a lot of fun to take our martial-arts oriented approach to the weapons and have some friendly matchup with the HEMA and fencing guys.<br /><br />Man that was a mouthful<br /><br />This isn't a match where I scored the most points - but it is one I'm really proud of. Trying to match the speed and footwork of a skilled fencer was a real test of where I've been able to get to with the Thai swords.<br /><br />This is an art I have been training in, in addition to my regular more practical martial arts.
