Now let me speak of the devil.<br /><br />The video starts with lengthy explanation that modern games are full of small little optimizations that are diminished as \"tricks\" in the script. I wholly disagree. Things like BSP trees or LODS are not \"tricks\". They are things the way it has to be done. The problem is, modern UE forces you to drop those techniques if favor of an automatic \"fits all\" solution. Using old stuff with the new graphical pipeline in UE kills performance and using old graphical pipeline is no longer an option (turning off stuff like lumen and nanites is not an option either as those continue adding their overhead, but without the benefit of either).<br /><br />This makes it really hard for game developers to live by the budget. You have to drop optimizations and hope that Unreal makes it all go well. Which is why I strongly disagree with the take that it's developer fault that we have blurry games (it's their fault for picking unreal, tho).<br /><br />Next thing that the guy mentioned is that we're going towards more accurate simulation of the world, which is hard to disagree. Yet, the question stands whether you need it. If you look closely modern AAA are yet to overcome Crysis in graphic fidelity which existed long before any sort of the unoptimized solutions for meshing or lighting existed. And new games with their all mighty rays are not capable of matching quality. Loot at Indiana Jones game for a clear example. <br /><br />And while I'm at it, let me have a take on RTX. It's abhorrent and downright scummy. As it came to my attention nvidia recently dropped 32 bit Physics support for their 5000 series cards. Making parallels with RTX, it makes any raytracing-only game look like slowly degrading goop that one day will not run on your freshly bought hardware. Imagine this: you finally bought a card that FINALLY runs the game you want in resolution you want without the upscaler blur and it doesn't run it because \"hurr durr RTX version too old\".<br /><br />At the same time I learned that RTX can be run on non-rtx cards on Linux. I guess I was right that there is no magic hardware that is only thing capable of raytracing? And you know what is funny? Indiana Jones did 50fps on vega64. That's far from unplayable and shows that raytracing requirements are arbitrary and probably made to justify AI/mining stuff in nvidia cards.<br /><br />But going back to the video we learn that it's apparently not developers fault after all and Lumens and then Nanites have overhead. But don't worry guys - this overhead is small and logarithmic! It's a great quote because it forgets a constant. When measuring computational complexity we use either big O or the small o to show how well it scales as well as adding a constant C. For example there could be a o(log n) + C notation which means that your algorithm does no more than log n actions (where N is the amount of elements) and then there's some kind of C which will be executed regardless. That C sometimes can be 0. And it's good. Usually its not. And it means that there's a certain threshold until which your algorithm is not beneficial. <br /><br />I argue that with Lumen and Nanite as is currently that constant is so enormous that it will be beneficial never. It's better to have those \"tricks\" which worked and worked well producing much better result than those methods of today.<br /><br />And I am not against innovation. The author remarked that in early 3d days people were against 3d because models weren't as crisp as sprites. And while I have trouble remembering that, I understand where they're coming from - look at early Alone in the Dark or god forbid Bubsy. Those people SHOULD HAVE stuck to 2d.
