Today is a day to acknowledge all the things men do for us, and celebrate manhood.\n\nI hope all of you will join me today in celebrating #InternationalMensDay.\n\nNow for a few statistics (amongst the many):\n\nMen commit suicide at 3.5 times the rate women do (white men making up 7 out of 10 suicides).\n\n100% of men (and 0% of women) in the United States are required to sign up for Selective Services or risk up to a $250,000 fine or 5 years in prison.\n\nMen make up ~91% of all inmates and receive according to one study, “It finds large gender gaps favoring women throughout the sentence length distribution (averaging over 60%), conditional on arrest offense, criminal history, and other pre-charge observables. Female arrestees are also significantly likelier to avoid charges and convictions entirely, and twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted.”\n\nMen account for ~90% for all those killed in workplace accidents.\n\nRight now, ~43% of all children live only with their mother (and it is growing).\n\nAccording to one study of the Court System in Massachusetts, women were awarded primary residential custody 90% of the time.\n\nFatherlessness is connected to a number of childhood issues including (but not limited to): 4 times more likely to live in poverty (47.6%), 5 times more likely to commit suicide (63% of suicides), 20 times more likely to have a behavioral disorder (85% of all children from a fatherless home), 9 times more likely to be a high school dropout (71% of total), 20 times more likely to be a youth in prison (85% of total).\n\nFatherlessness also affects daughters: 711% more likely to be a teenage parent, 164% more likely for premarital birth, and 92% more likely to get divorced.\n\nMen make up less than 50% in colleges (in some cases 30-40% only).\n\n51% of the homeless are single men (17% are single women).\n\nFor domestic violence, in one study they found that 24% of heterosexual relationships had violence. Of that 24%, 49.7% were reciprocally violent (meaning both the man and the woman were abusing each other), and of the half that was non-reciprocally violent, women were the perpetrators over 70% of the time.\n\nIn juvenile facilities, of the youth who reported sexual victimization, 95% stated they were victimized by a female staff member.\n\n77% of all homicides were male.\n\nSources:\nhttps://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/1998/Sep/wk5/art03.htm\nhttp://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.2005.079020\nhttps://www.prisonpolicy.org/graphs/genderinc.html\nhttps://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2144002\nhttps://afsp.org/about-suicide/suicide-statistics/\nhttp://www.fathers.com/statistics-and-research/the-extent-of-fatherlessness/\nhttp://www.fathers.com/statistics-and-research/the-consequences-of-fatherlessness/\nhttps://thefatherlessgeneration.wordpress.com/statistics/\nhttps://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2144002\nhttps://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/svjfry09.pdf\nhttp://ir.law.fsu.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1419&context=lr\nhttp://nationalhomeless.org/publications/facts/Whois.pdf\nhttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1635092",

"content": "In one of my classes (WR 281: Writing in the Community) we are reading a book, The Elements of Literacy by Julie Lindquist and David Seitz. In chapter 4 of this book, Literacy and Class, the authors mention a Brazilian educator who came up with own practice of teaching literacy he calls \"Critical Pedagogy.\"<br /><br />Below is the response I wrote for my class specifically on this topic.<br />In chapter 4, the author's discuss a practice named \"critical pedagogy\" which was developed by Paulo Friere. According to Friere, the traditional teaching model was one where teachers input knowledge into their students, and students were prized for how well they received and kept that knowledge. On the other hand, Friere's \"critical pedagogy\" was meant to be based off of posing problems and \"asks students to think critically about the political implications of literacy.\" The ultimate purpose being that the students reach a place of \"critical consciousness\" in those who are \"disempowered.\"<br /><br />I can agree with Friere that we should not be using a model like the one he posits as \"the traditional teaching model.\" Once children have moved into secondary education, I see little reason to not begin forcing them to think critically. I'm a little saddened when I meet people who are either in college, or are otherwise \"adults,\" who wait to be told how they should interpret something instead of using prudence. I truly believe that the purpose of education ought to be giving students the tools they need to become self-sustaining individuals.<br /><br />However, that is where my agreement with Friere must end. I find it ironic how someone who wishes to remove a system by which students are told what to think, will have simply created it in a new way. He has replaced one ideology that students are to memorize and believe with another (just one he deems \"good\"). The stated goal of his pedagogy is to \"get students to see forms of oppression.\" And what a goal that is. It appears the cart has been put before the horse in this case. It seems to me that Friere's \"critical pedagogy\" has a two major built-in assumptions in it. The assumption of the teacher (according to Friere) is that 1. forms of oppression exist (though the \"forms\" are never defined and neither is \"oppression\" for that matter) and 2. students must be taught (though I might call it \"indoctrinated\") to see this supposed \"oppression.\" So, instead of helping students improve themselves by helping them learn to think for themselves, we have a teacher pushing an agenda (whether you agree with the agenda or not, it is still being pushed). No longer is the purpose of this education to help students become individuals, now they are being trained as soldiers in a war against whatever enemy the teacher decides is worthy of assault. Students who thought they were going to college to \"expand their mind,\" are now simply having their minds shaped. Not only is this entire pedagogy insidious, it is also, in my opinion, quite unethical in its stated goal (and most likely in its practice). The fact that Friere's ideas on literacy have been \"adapted and adopted in many U.S. college writing classes,\" is not just worrying, it's a horrifying prospect. There are some lines that teachers (especially professors) ought not cross, and this line is one of them. Once we begin to sacrifice our ethics on the altar of \"for the greater good,\" then all we will begin to justify every evil as a \"necessary evil.\" And that, as a future educator, is a path I refuse to walk down.",
