And in the spirit of the season, I've drawn a new locomotive to add to the collection. Even better, I have some good news to share with you. I now have a DeviantArt account, so you'll be able to download this and more, free of charge and in its original quality. No more crunched up images on Minds! You can now have the option to visit my DeviantArt page and view my stuff in their original formats as they were intended. And don't worry, I'll still post them here. But I'll also be posting them to my account on DeviantArt where you will finally be able to download and view them without the pics being crushed into Minds' page layout and getting distorted. Tell me what you think about that and please share this widely. Remind this to all your friends and, if you can and wish to, please chip a token my way as a way of saying \"Thank you\". Please to enjoy. Merry Christmas. :-) #art",

For any of you that have been following me so far, you might have noticed that I've been out of the loop the past two weeks. No, it wasn't because I \"got tired\" of the Minds community or any of the crazy stuff that's being talked about. My Internet access went down the very early morning of Tuesday the 11th. and it had been out two weeks, preventing me from partaking in my usual twice weekly check-ins to Minds (there are at least some of you whose content I comment on pretty frequently, that's why I am posting this entry). All is fine now. My Internet's back and working again. However, don't think that I sat on my fanny resting on my laurels and doing nothing that whole time. I took the time away to do some more of my CPU drawings and I've got quite a few new things to share over the coming days and weeks. And I'm still doing trains, so more of that will be coming in due time as well. I may even get around to doing something for Christmas in a couple days. I just wanted to inform you that I'm not gone and to be looking out for more of my content very soon. And before I forget, I wish to thank @JQnet for supporting my content back on the 10th. Your support is appreciated. I do apologize for that coming so late. INCLUDED ARE LINKS TO RESOURCES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS UPLOAD AS WELL AS A DIRECT REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE IN OBTAINING PROCESSOR CHIPS AND MODULES LIKE THE ONE DEPICTED HERE. PLEASE ENJOY. :-)

Hi all, I'm back with a new piece of art to share with you. It is the next in my SCB's Chips series and this one is the first mainframe computer CPU I have drawn and colored. This module is an actual real processor unit and is used in IBM's System z9 enterprise mainframe computer, a very large system introduced back in 2005 for use as a business mainframe and high-performance enterprise server processor.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with mainframe computers, these are very large and powerful computers used by large businesses and the government to handle large quantities of data. They feature lots of redundant and parallel processor, memory and storage elements for enhanced data reliability, security and system stability. As such, these things are designed to be plugged in, booted up and run continuously for weeks, months or even years without ever shutting down. The high redundancy ensures that data stored on them are constantly available and modern mainframe systems are highly fault-tolerant. Put simply, a mainframe can take a licking and keep on ticking :-).

This particular processor module drawing was inspired by a video I saw recently on the YouTube channel \"Play with Junk\" (a good channel to check out if you are into equipment teardowns like I am) as well as a variety of photographs I have amassed over the years of things like this. Links to my sources and resources will be included below.

A brief description of each chip's function on this module is as follows...

Upper left and lower left chips:
These are the Memory Storage Controller chips. These, I presume, are the chips responsible for controlling and managing the interface between the processors and the memory planes in the computer.

Upper row second, third and fourth chips, second and third rows leftmost chips, third row rightmost chip and bottom row second and third chips:
These are the Processor Units. Each is a dual core parallel device that processes the same instruction on both cores for redundancy and to serve as a means of correcting errors on the fly. This is slightly different from a true parallel processor wherein each core processes different instructions or sets of data simultaneously, although this processor may be able to do that as well.

Centermost four chips arranged in a 2 x 2 square:
These are the L3 and L4 caches. IBM labels these as \"SD\" in their technical documentation. Level 3 and 4 caches are used to hold more data or instructions than the level 1 and 2 caches, and perform much the same function as in most other computers. The most frequently needed data and instructions go in these caches so the CPU can have faster access to it and not need to rely as much on the far slower RAM in the memory planes external of the processor.

Second row rightmost chip:
I've heard this described as the \"coherency control\" chip and it is usually marked \"SC\" in IBM service docs. This chip controls the flow of data and clocking signals throughout the entire module. As for why, I'm not sure. Maybe this chip functions similarly to the northbridge and southbridge chips in a personal computer.

Lower rightmost chip in the bottom row:
This is the unit clock generator and controller chip. It sets the clock frequency for the various buses in the module and outside the module for precision timing and control of the signals going into and out of the processor module.

The module substrate is a rather thick heavy tile of ceramic material measuring around 4 inches (between 110 and 120 mm) per side by approximately 0.65 to 0.75 inch (15 to 19 mm) thick and contains some 104 layers of internal wiring. The interface to the main board is a split matrix 77 x 77 LGA socket having 5,184 pins, the pin field being blocked into four \"quadrants\", each containing 1,296 pins in a 36 x 36 square matrix having an estimated 0.050\" spacing between pins. My sizing is a very rough estimate as the video didn't depict the module against a ruler. I could be off by a light-year, figuratively speaking, on my estimates :-P.

NOW FOR THE \"REQUEST\" PORTION OF MY POST...

To those of you who have seen my stuff up to now, you are probably aware that I collect processor chips as one of several hobbies I'm into. I normally don't like asking strangers for help with most things. I'm apt to just look at something and if it costs over a certain price threshold to purchase, I will frown and say or think that I'll never have one, moving on to other things. I have a bad history with that and every time, it seems, I eventually end up with exactly the thing that I figured I'd never ever have or get in my collection. I used to do that with laptop computers. I have done that with certain kinds of tapes and disks. And I still do that today with storage media and processors.

Sometimes, I finally have these things because I kind of \"force\" things to work my way (I used to do that as a kid, though not any more now that I'm grown up). But usually it's more luck of the draw and timing and I have NEVER figured out how to make timing and luck work consistently to my advantage when seeking these things out via any venue. Being unemployed and totally broke most of the time doesn't help the case any and often serves to trigger a bit of desperation on my part.

Now, I have no Earthly clue how to go about asking complete strangers for something like a mainframe processor module. I know absolutely nothing about mainframe computers beyond what's provided by Wikipedia and the few computer books I have read over the years. I'm totally unfamiliar with that market or any of the kinds of online search terms I should be using to find these things. Google is absolutely and utterly useless for this. I can say this because I have tried multiple times on many different occasions using Google and DuckDuckGo, all to no effect. Amazon seems similarly useless although I can search for other kinds of processors and score all kinds of hits (after all, I did buy an Itanium 2 from Amazon for my birthday this year using gift card funds left over from Christmas 2017). So I KNOW Amazon isn't totally useless, but searching for \"IBM System Z9 Processor Module\" has so far yielded ZERO results and I'm at a loss of how to react to that. I'm wont to blame Amazon and Google for the lacking success, but maybe that's a paper tiger. Maybe there is something I'M not doing right. As usual, I have no answers to any of these questions.

Very often I hear folks talk about stuff they've bought on eBay. My problem with eBay is the sheer utter lack of gift cards. I know they have a GC system, but NONE of the stores where I live seem to carry eBay gift cards or even know that such exist. It's hard enough to find gift cards for Amazon, let alone anyone else. Also, eBay only accepts PayPal or credit card as alternate payment options. They once used to allow payments via check and money order, but I guess they killed those off due to all the scams and fake listings being used to steal buyers' money. I have purchased things off of eBay in past times and each time I bought something, I never had any trouble. It's a good place to go to buy things not found in more traditional venues. But, if I can't use my preferred payment means and I can't get gift cards, eBay is totally unusable for my needs. I DO have a PayPal account as well as an online banking account with CapitalOne, but I'm unemployed and I can't work out how to get any money so that I can activate those accounts and start buying again.

So, that's where YOU, the reader, come in. I want to continue growing my collection so that I can continue drawing and being inspired to draw these processors. Having actual specimens is crucial to ensuring my drawings are to the best accuracy possible. I'm temporarily suspending my fears of trusting strangers so that I can make this request for help. If you work with enterprise computing systems or know someone who does, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE REACH OUT TO ME! I can't pay money for things the way I should and a donation or gift of one of these System z9 processors (or any others that I indicate as ones I don't have yet) would make me very happy and would go a long way toward providing the accuracy I'm needing in my works. I would really love to have one of these in my collection. I don't know how common or widespread things like Alphaservers or the System z family of mainframes are today or even if any still exist or if they have all been \"scrapped\" or parted out by now. It is absolutely imperative to remind and share this with as many people as you can so that this has some chance of reaching the right people. Also, if you run some kind of club for computer or chip collectors, vintage or modern, please tell me how I can join and whether it will cost anything to join.

And if you like this kind of content, give it a thumbs up and donate a Token or two. Thank you very much for reading this far. I know it's long and rambly, but I needed to get this out to the world. Also consider subscribing, if you have not done so already, as that's the only way I can receive and respond to any private messages from you.
