"content": "About a month ago - maybe two, as I'm not great with the passage of time - I was standing on a subway platform waiting for a train. <br /><br />There were three men in my immediate vicinity; one was obviously a transit employee by uniform, and the others identified themselves to him as carpenters from Local something-or-other. The two men were examining, actually prodding, the area around a missing tile and speaking of the potential threats to subway passengers should the wall continue to deteriorate. The workmen had come equipped with a ladder, tools and opinions as to what would be required to effect repairs. The transit employee was engaged in a vigorous debate with interested parties on his walkie-talkie, regarding the various people and unions that would need to be marshaled to replace the tile and shore up the area.<br /><br />While not beyond the realm of possibility that carpenters could repair a tiled wall, the two were clearly out of their element. Also, as is often the case in multi-union environments, it appeared that people from at least two other unions would need to be involved in this process.<br /><br />As the initial encounter caught my attention, I have followed the progress of this relatively minor project. As with other initiatives I have observed in an increasingly deteriorating environment, there appears to be an initial flurry of discussion followed by virtually no actual solution.<br /><br />As the weeks tick by I imagine rooms full of committees, people with expensive pointing devices outlining the various plans and milestones on charts and illustrations. The project plan is no doubt daunting and involves various factions and their associated deliverables. Some day, perhaps, this monumental effort will yield a positive result.<br /><br />As a greatly elongated interim step, however, some guy (and it has to be a guy) has saved the day with an imposing amount of duct tape.<br />",

It wasn't my conversation, so I just listened. <br /><br />For some reason, many Canadians seem to think the Prime Minister holds an equivalent position to the U.S. President. For the record, the President of the United States is elected to this office; the Canadian Prime Minister, while holding an elected position, is more like the cheer-leader (the main minister if you will) for the ruling party. <br /><br />The young man espousing his position was saying that the Liberal candidate was the better choice as he is an accomplished \"bureaucrat\", exactly what is needed to advocate for Canada against other world leaders. For some reason I doubt he is fully conversant with the definition of this word, in short, \"An official in a government department, in particular one perceived as being concerned with procedural correctness at the expense of people's needs.\" I don't recall this kid ever being on the right side of any argument, but from a purely factual standpoint, he may have inadvertently found the right word to describe his preferred candidate.<br /><br />Anyway, there are two days to go before the culmination of what is being described as a profoundly boring, but historically consequential, Canadian election. In a week we'll see if we're as dumb as the news media has been \"reporting\".",

"content": "A friend called in a panic about four events he had just experienced, which involved an email and three phone calls. <br /><br />The email:<br />One of those canned Google emails sent automatically when an unusual request is made. In this case someone had requested our friend's email address be used as his recovery email. These notifications can usually be safely ignored.<br /><br />The first cell phone call:<br />Shortly thereafter, he received a call from a \"Google support technician\" telling him his email had been compromised. To safeguard his account the polite, literate fellow inactivated his password, a new one was texted to him, and he was advised to use it to change his GMail password - which he did. Ok, this wouldn't have been my first choice.<br /><br />The second call:<br />Call number two was apparently from \"Trezor Support\" telling him his hardware wallet was compromised, and that someone was trying to \"break in\". They wanted to know how much bitcoin he held in the wallet, among other things. Mercifully while he does have a Trezor device, it has been in a drawer, unused, for some time; although he did mention it held nothing of value. So, this conversation went nowhere.<br /><br />The third call:<br />This call, from one of the people he spoke with earlier, was to taunt him about being screwed; they were going to fuck him up and open credit cards with his information. <br /><br />While I assumed everyone knew this, it is important to realize that at no time in the history of the universe will someone from either Google or Trezor call you directly for any reason. If they did, which they won't, one hopes you wouldn't use a temporary password sent in a text message, or provide them with any personal information.<br /><br />The scammers had his correct name, cell phone number and email address; not a huge feat these days with our omnipresent online presence. Were they verifying data they had stolen or purchased? Why did they go to the trouble of suspending his email password? How did they accomplish this? If they already had access to his email account why would his participation be necessary, unless getting him to comply with the request was some sort of gullibility test. If they had breached his home computer, the \"Google\" password change exercise would make a little more sense.<br /><br />Today, he received what appears to be a legitimate email from Trezor warning him his online account, and possibly a phone or computer, has been compromised. They helpfully suggested he should look into that.<br /><br />These days it's a certainty that any stranger who calls you wants something, whether it involves soliciting business, getting your unpaid opinions, phishing for personal information or trying to con you out of your hard-earned resources. I can think of no situation in which talking to strangers benefits you. The world is now teeming with disreputable people and companies who, devoid of any human empathy, think it's perfectly acceptable to socially engineer you into willingly giving them your information or money.<br /><br />It annoys me that I'm not completely clear on the exact nature of the scam. Unless and until I do, however, everyone can improve their chances of not being victimized by throwing away their copy of Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior, channeling their \"inner assholeness\", and being careful out there.",

"content": "A friend called in a panic about four events he had just experienced, which involved an email and three phone calls. \n\nThe email:\nOne of those canned Google emails sent automatically when an unusual request is made. In this case someone had requested our friend's email address be used as his recovery email. These notifications can usually be safely ignored.\n\nThe first cell phone call:\nShortly thereafter, he received a call from a \"Google support technician\" telling him his email had been compromised. To safeguard his account the polite, literate fellow inactivated his password, a new one was texted to him, and he was advised to use it to change his GMail password - which he did. Ok, this wouldn't have been my first choice.\n\nThe second call:\nCall number two was apparently from \"Trezor Support\" telling him his hardware wallet was compromised, and that someone was trying to \"break in\". They wanted to know how much bitcoin he held in the wallet, among other things. Mercifully while he does have a Trezor device, it has been in a drawer, unused, for some time; although he did mention it held nothing of value. So, this conversation went nowhere.\n\nThe third call:\nThis call, from one of the people he spoke with earlier, was to taunt him about being screwed; they were going to fuck him up and open credit cards with his information. \n\nWhile I assumed everyone knew this, it is important to realize that at no time in the history of the universe will someone from either Google or Trezor call you directly for any reason. If they did, which they won't, one hopes you wouldn't use a temporary password sent in a text message, or provide them with any personal information.\n\nThe scammers had his correct name, cell phone number and email address; not a huge feat these days with our omnipresent online presence. Were they verifying data they had stolen or purchased? Why did they go to the trouble of suspending his email password? How did they accomplish this? If they already had access to his email account why would his participation be necessary, unless getting him to comply with the request was some sort of gullibility test. If they had breached his home computer, the \"Google\" password change exercise would make a little more sense.\n\nToday, he received what appears to be a legitimate email from Trezor warning him his online account, and possibly a phone or computer, has been compromised. They helpfully suggested he should look into that.\n\nThese days it's a certainty that any stranger who calls you wants something, whether it involves soliciting business, getting your unpaid opinions, phishing for personal information or trying to con you out of your hard-earned resources. I can think of no situation in which talking to strangers benefits you. The world is now teeming with disreputable people and companies who, devoid of any human empathy, think it's perfectly acceptable to socially engineer you into willingly giving them your information or money.\n\nIt annoys me that I'm not completely clear on the exact nature of the scam. Unless and until I do, however, everyone can improve their chances of not being victimized by throwing away their copy of Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior, channeling their \"inner assholeness\", and being careful out there.",
