And I swat at him playfully<br /><br />We crack up, and I try to fill in the sitter so she doesn't feel left out. It's silly, they're just there to fulfill a legal requirement.<br /><br /> Filling in another caregiver has become habit. She doesn't care. The whole night, they were completely distracted by a screen, or the latest gossip.<br /><br />Multiple times I reprimanded myself for not putting my pen away. Then I laugh thinking about how he had taken my pen apart to fix it. <br /><br />I look over and see it partially disassembled. My instinct is to grab it away, but a more logical thought overrides it. <br /><br />\"What are you doing?\"<br /><br />He says, the spring is stuck and I can fix it.<br /><br />I tell him that it can't be fixed because when I leave my pens in the car the heat damages them. The ink has leaked out. We play around with the idea of viscosity and how difficult it is to remember whether something has a low or high viscosity. <br /><br />I like the sound of viscous. It feels like a thin word, but is matter with a high viscosity thin?<br /><br />At this point, it's been six hours<br />It took six hours <br />To see my sweet silly boy<br />Break out of the silence<br /><br />Not that he stopped talking, per se<br />But he became quiet<br /><br />Just for a moment<br />I thought, there's my sassy boy!<br />What cheek!<br /><br />Then he dove back into his game<br /><br /><br />He's brilliant<br /> And courageous<br /><br />A patient next door is hollaring, throwing a fit<br /><br />My son stays the course<br /><br />I am proud of him, and know I've done well to prepare him for this moment<br /><br />Six years<br />He waited six years<br />For the right medication<br />To be old enough for treatment<br /><br />The list goes on.<br /><br />Now we're here<br /><br />To my baby, you are not alone.",
