"content": "About a month ago - maybe two, as I'm not great with the passage of time - I was standing on a subway platform waiting for a train. <br /><br />There were three men in my immediate vicinity; one was obviously a transit employee by uniform, and the others identified themselves to him as carpenters from Local something-or-other. The two men were examining, actually prodding, the area around a missing tile and speaking of the potential threats to subway passengers should the wall continue to deteriorate. The workmen had come equipped with a ladder, tools and opinions as to what would be required to effect repairs. The transit employee was engaged in a vigorous debate with interested parties on his walkie-talkie, regarding the various people and unions that would need to be marshaled to replace the tile and shore up the area.<br /><br />While not beyond the realm of possibility that carpenters could repair a tiled wall, the two were clearly out of their element. Also, as is often the case in multi-union environments, it appeared that people from at least two other unions would need to be involved in this process.<br /><br />As the initial encounter caught my attention, I have followed the progress of this relatively minor project. As with other initiatives I have observed in an increasingly deteriorating environment, there appears to be an initial flurry of discussion followed by virtually no actual solution.<br /><br />As the weeks tick by I imagine rooms full of committees, people with expensive pointing devices outlining the various plans and milestones on charts and illustrations. The project plan is no doubt daunting and involves various factions and their associated deliverables. Some day, perhaps, this monumental effort will yield a positive result.<br /><br />As a greatly elongated interim step, however, some guy (and it has to be a guy) has saved the day with an imposing amount of duct tape.<br />",

After decades in politics, common sense would finally prevail in the general population, and this was his time to shine. <br /><br />Then, in the blink of an eye, it was all gone. <br /><br />Over a few short months, the prevailing Prime Minister was blamed for the disastrous decade of Liberal rule, first by his own party and then the world at large. He was unceremoniously kicked to the curb, never to be seen again. A rank outsider won the party nomination and was immediately installed as the next Prime Minister of Canada. The new guy jetted around globally looking Prime Ministerial, took center stage on all legacy media broadcasts, and neutered the Conservative Platform when he, himself, \"Axed the [Carbon]Tax\". To be fair it still exists and can be fully resurrected at any time. The new guy wisely capitalized on this momentum (monetary joke), and called a snap election. He dominated legacy media and promised to be the most worthy adversary of the evil, orange man south of the border.<br /><br />After the shortest possible electoral period, when the dust settled, the Liberals again prevailed and somewhat incongruously the other party leaders - Conservative, NDP and Green parties - lost their electoral seats. Holy, \"Lucy and the football.\"<br /><br />The same party, elected officials, and policies that put this country into the toilet, are both back and proclaimed as heralding a new era of prosperity. The legacy media is pretty happy with their outrageously, but not conflict inducing, government funding. White Liberals everywhere are positively giddy with excitement that \"Banker Jesus\" is going to save them.<br /><br />As an interesting side note, in this country and abroad, commentators and fans manage to correctly pronounce the most esoteric family names of competitors from all parts of the world. Whether by disinterest, or malice, virtually no one I encountered was able to correctly pronounce Pierre Poilievres' name. This oddly does not bode well for your ability to be elected to the country's highest office. If I had been on Team Poilievre I would have created a line of free merch - hats or t-shirts or posters - that would be shoveled out to anyone that would take it. Everything would phonetically educate the populace to pronounce and remember, Pierre Polly-ev-RA! "content": "I overheard a lively debate regarding the principals in the upcoming Canadian federal election. It wasn't my conversation, so I just listened. <br /><br />For some reason, many Canadians seem to think the Prime Minister holds an equivalent position to the U.S. President. For the record, the President of the United States is elected to this office; the Canadian Prime Minister, while holding an elected position, is more like the cheer-leader (the main minister if you will) for the ruling party. <br /><br />The young man espousing his position was saying that the Liberal candidate was the better choice as he is an accomplished \"bureaucrat\", exactly what is needed to advocate for Canada against other world leaders. For some reason I doubt he is fully conversant with the definition of this word, in short, \"An official in a government department, in particular one perceived as being concerned with procedural correctness at the expense of people's needs.\" I don't recall this kid ever being on the right side of any argument, but from a purely factual standpoint, he may have inadvertently found the right word to describe his preferred candidate.<br /><br />Anyway, there are two days to go before the culmination of what is being described as a profoundly boring, but historically consequential, Canadian election. In a week we'll see if we're as dumb as the news media has been \"reporting\".",

For the record, the President of the United States is elected to this office; the Canadian Prime Minister, while holding an elected position, is more like the cheer-leader (the main minister if you will) for the ruling party. \n\nThe young man espousing his position was saying that the Liberal candidate was the better choice as he is an accomplished \"bureaucrat\", exactly what is needed to advocate for Canada against other world leaders. For some reason I doubt he is fully conversant with the definition of this word, in short, \"An official in a government department, in particular one perceived as being concerned with procedural correctness at the expense of people's needs.\" I don't recall this kid ever being on the right side of any argument, but from a purely factual standpoint, he may have inadvertently found the right word to describe his preferred candidate.\n\nAnyway, there are two days to go before the culmination of what is being described as a profoundly boring, but historically consequential, Canadian election. In a week we'll see if we're as dumb as the news media has been \"reporting\".",

You exchange pleasantries with the guy, and put some heavy jars on the very end to avoid dropping them. What do you think you're doing?\" It's hard to get the right inflection into print, but imagine she has caught me bludgeoning a basket full of adorable puppies to death with a ball-peen hammer.<br /><br />I mutely pick up my purchases as engaging in a discussion at this point would not go well, wait briefly for a self-serve machine and exit the store.<br /><br />Time to walk off being accused of gratuitous rudeness by a 20-something crusader: <br /><br />10 minutes at a quick, steady pace.",
