These are a bit long, but important, so please skim through them to get the basic idea.

ORGANIC VS CHEMICAL AGRICULTURE

Pesticides, artificial fertilizers, and other agrochemicals have been clearly shown to cause massive animal suffering, damage to the environment, and harm to human health. And although organic plant agriculture often does include animal harm and exploitation, on balance it causes far less animal harm and exploitation, and uses dramatically less chemical application, than non-organic factory crop agriculture. Doing one’s best to eat organic plant foods is a very vegan pursuit.

Please do not post comments downplaying or denying chemical based agriculture's harms to health, animals and the environment, or implying that organic plant agriculture is as harmful as chemical based agriculture.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS (GMOs)

Genetically modified foods (GMOs) are not vegan, because (as with pharmaceutical drugs) they are routinely tested on animals and/or developed with animal ingredients. Furthermore, all currently cultivated GMO crops are a key component in the massively destructive, chemical based, factory farm agriculture industry, which causes immense suffering and damage to animals and the environment. Most GMO crops are fed directly to animals being bred to be killed for food. Strong and extensive evidence has shown that eating GMO foods can cause serious harm to the health of both animals and people.

There is some controversy over GMOs between vegans because many non animal based replacements for meat, eggs and dairy are made with GMOs. However, because it is not necessary for vegans to consume GMOs and many alternatives are available, and in light of the profound damage and suffering that GMO agriculture entails, it cannot be credibly argued that GMOs are needed to reduce animal suffering.

While discussion of the potential impacts of GMOs on veganism, health and the environment is encouraged, comments explicitly championing GMOs, or falsely claiming that there is a 'scientific consensus' that GMOs are safe, are not permitted. Bashing those who question the safety of GMOs with labels like ‘anti-science’, ‘pseudo-science’, ‘conspiracy theory’, ‘woo’, etc. is likewise not allowed.

SOY FOODS

With the exception of GMO soy products, there is no credible body of evidence showing that soy is in any way harmful, and there is a great deal of evidence showing that soy is an excellent, health boosting alternative to eating meat, eggs and dairy. Almost all claims that soy is somehow harmful, are driven by specific special interest groups which promote the eating of meat, dairy, and egg products. Healthy non-GMO soy products are a *crucial* and *fun* source of food for vegans. Soy bashing is not permitted.

RAW FOODS

Raw food vegan diets can have powerful health benefits, however a raw food diet is neither the only path, nor a superior path to healthy veganism. While there is credible evidence showing that many thrive on raw vegan diets, there is also plenty of evidence that most vegans also thrive equally well on cooked foods. Many plant foods such as kale and tomatoes are even nutritionally superior when cooked. There is also a growing body of evidence suggesting that the very evolution of humans as a species was brought about by the invention of cooking tubers and other foods. Raw food enthusiasts should by all means feel free to shout out their successes. However claims that cooking food is inherently bad for health have no scientific basis, and are not permitted.

VEGETABLE OILS

Recently claims have arisen that all vegetable oils, even olive oil, are somehow inherently harmful to health. Such claims are simply not backed up by solid evidence. Flax oil and other plant oils like hemp and walnut oil, are a very important source of omega 3 fatty acids for vegans. Vegetable oils play a very important role in the diet of most vegans. Reasonably discussing how much oil to use, or the health impacts of particular oils compared to other oils, is allowed, however bashing vegetable oils as inherently unhealthy is not.

VACCINATION

Because all vaccines are tested on animals and many are produced with animal products, many vegans seek to minimize or even eliminate vaccine use. However it is also true that some very serious diseases have been curbed by vaccines, and no vegan is expected to reject life-saving medical treatment.

Many vaccines have been proven to be extremely dangerous (many of them more dangerous than the diseases that they are supposed to prevent) and there is solid and ample peer reviewed science showing this to be the case. Posts that demonize those who question vaccine safety (by labeling them with terms like anti-science, pseudo-science, conspiracy theorists, etc.) are not permitted.

VITAMIN B12

Because of modern water sanitation, and chemical/pesticide based agriculture, natural sources of Vitamin B12 are no longer guaranteed through any diet, and vegans are particularly vulnerable to B12 deficiency. B12 is created by bacteria in natural soil and water environments, and so has been largely purged from our sanitized food and water supply.

B12 deficiency can cause serious irreversible nerve and brain damage, paralysis, heart disease, and even death. Because of these realities it is vital that vegans supplement B12 in their diets.

Claims that vegans do not need B12 supplements or can get adequate B12 through means like eating unwashed vegetables, spirulina, algae, fermented foods, or raw foods, are absolutely false, and potentially extremely dangerous to fellow vegans. Such claims are not permitted and will be deleted.
