"content": "Over the years I've come to a realization. The attitude of a person is probably one of the most important traits to consider when it comes to other martial artists. <br /><br />Their technical skill and their \"fighting\" ability may be exceptional. However, if their attitude is poor they usually end up doing more to damage the wider martial arts community than any benefit they bring. <br /><br />The words in the image above were sent to me in a message earlier this week by a fellow martial artist and it encapsulates in four short characters the attitude that I wish to see more in the world of martial artists.<br /><br />武林一家 (wǔlín yījiā) which I might render in English: \"Martial artists are one family.\"<br /><br />If we approach each other with an attitude of compassion, patience, and at least an attempt to understand each other, it would not surprise me to find that most of us share more than a few things in common. <br /><br />Someone who may be considered misguided or misinformed is at best treated as stupid and at worst as an enemy. This will never improve either ourselves or the practice in question. <br /><br />Which approach do you think would be more effective? Coming alongside another martial artist, shoulder-to-shoulder, to walk together for a time. Or to simply treat them with contempt and scorn? One will make a friend and open a door to a changed mind. The other only throws up barriers and creates friction. One is hard, slow, and requires work. The other is fast, lazy, and gratuitous.<br /><br />Martial artists should approach each other as brothers and sisters, as family members who care for each other's health, well-being, and growth.",
