"Venus Giving Arms to Aeneas<br />Terracotta, Paris, 1704 by French 🇫🇷 sculptor Jean Cornu (1650-1710), he regularly worked as a ‘sculptor in ordinary’ at the court of Louis XIV.<br /><br />This gorgeous sculpture is on view at The MET in 📍Gallery 532. It’s a wonderful hidden gem to sketch, which is what I did several weeks ago, I’ll be back for it because I found it before closing and had to rush.<br /><br />In an episode taken from Virgil’s Aeneid, the goddess Venus descends from the skies to present her son, the Trojan prince Aeneas, with a spectacular set of armor. As an addition to the story, Cupid, half-brother of Aeneas, raises the shield. As a reminder: Venus, the Roman goddess’ functions encompass love and beauty.<br /><br />Modern thinking has you doubt what beauty is. That beauty is subjective. Is it really?<br /><br />According to Plato, beauty is an idea or Form of which beautiful things are consequence, and it is objective and not about the observer’s experience. It is an arrangement of integral parts into a coherent whole, according to order, proportion, and symmetry.<br /><br />Plato conceived the Idea of good as the supreme one, with all other Ideas, including beauty, existing under it. In his ontology, beauty, good, truth, and other virtues are all tied together, and “to be beautiful,” “to be virtuous,” and “to have true knowledge” are inseparable.<br /><br />Plotinus, who developed the Neo-Platonic tradition, also held that good and beauty are one in the realm of thought, and that the soul must be cultivated to see good and beauty.<br /><br />These ideas are the main reasons why I don’t post conceptual or modern art even though it’s not the speciality of the MET, they have an extensive collection of such works. Despite my art education from an institution that favored conceptual art, it’s almost an act of rebellion to honor ancient ideals such as those shared above.<br /><br />By seeking true beauty, my heart is fulfilled.
