Und doch fand die Anwerbung von Kreuzfahrern nicht hinter verschlossenen Türen statt, sondern öffentlich, vor ganzen Bevölkerungsscharen.<br /><br />Urbans Aufruf führte durchaus zum gewünschten Effekt. Große Namen des fränkischen, normannischen, aber auch deutschen Adels reagierten entsprechend. Unter den Deutschen sogar jene, die eigentlich in Heinrichs Lager gehörten und somit den Gegenpapst unterstützen sollten. Doch der Kreuzzungsgedanke entfachte viele Herzen. Adelige aus Schottland und Flandern eilten herbei. Viele hatten ihr Eigentum verpfändet, um ihren Anteil der Reise zu finanzieren.<br />Doch bereits lange vor dem festgelegten Datum des Aufbruchs ins Heilige Land zeichnet sich ab, dass der Kreuzzug erstmal mit einem anderen Feindbild abrechnen wird - den europäischen Juden.
