"content": "To really understand the problem of the Arab population west of Jordan you need to filter out all the passionary bullshit from both sides and look at this from a purely economical/business perspective.<br /><br />After winning the war in 1967, Israel came in posession of roughly 1 million (<a href=\"http://www.levyinstitute.org/palestinian-census/\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.levyinstitute.org/palestinian-census/</a>) additional subjects, and the government had absolutely no idea how to deal with them (there are many reasons for that, and it's not a simple topic). So, captured territories remained under military control, with no strategic vision for them whatsoever. At the time, Israel had more pressing matters, literally fighting for survival with surrounding enemy states every decade (1948, 1956, 1967, 1973). The peace treaty with Egypt - which gave Israel the first major relief over 30 years since the foundation of the state - took place only in 1977.<br /><br />Obviously, living conditions in the military controlled territories were plain horrible (although Israel itself wasn't quite thriving at that time). And obviously this is a very fertile ground for all kinds of uprisings - one just needs to properly direct them at the right target. That is (again if you cut the bullshit) the main reason for the first 'intifada' (indiscriminate terror against Jewish population).<br /><br />On the other hand, anti-Israel sentiment created a huge economic opportunity for anyone who could promise outcomes outside of the government activity (governments are inefficient, and generally suck at accomplishing things). That is how PLO came into play (their secular and left-leaning stance was ideal to draw funds from the USSR, which saw that as an opportunity to counter US influence in the region). Those are also origins of both Hezbollah and Hamas - if there are major players who are ready to invest into the destruction of Israel (like Iran), but lack capability or desire to go to war themselves, they just find someone to outsource the thing.<br /><br />To continue with the startup terminology - at some point PLO (and Arafat, in the first place) made a successful exit. The fact that it happened right after their main investor (USSR) went bankrupt and ceased to exist, is not a coincidence at all. Arafat quickly realized (whatever else this guy was, he wasn't stupid and didn't lack courage) that if he does not capitalize quickly, he'll never have another chance.<br /><br />Hamas, on the other hand, has very different kinds of investors. As the consensus about the necessity for constructive relationships with Israel is growing among Gulf states, their potential investor base is shrinking, so they were in a desperate need for an impressive roadshow. Which is exactly what this was all about. Again the fact that it happened shortly after the new U.S. administration announced resumption of the financial aid to the autonomy, is not a coincidence at all. This was their way of saying 'we want our share of that money'.<br /><br />There are many other interesting questions that have quite unexpected answers if you just consider the business perspective. For example, tunnel warfare. Why is it even a thing? It's rather obvious that, as soon as the location is known to the adversary, any 'terror tunnel' stops being a tactical advantage and starts being a deadly trap (this is a typical problem with security through obscurity). A very likely answer is that any construction work is very corruption-friendly (it's much easier to appropriate money allocated to construction, than money allocated to healthcare or education).<br /><br />So what to make of it? I'm certain that the real solution is to make a peaceful coexistence way more profitable than throwing rocks from the Temple Mount. After this goal is accomplished - many questions that are unsolvable today will simply cease to exist.<br />",
