"content": "Over the years, I've talked about my struggles with weight, and the different ways I've tried to win that struggle.<br /><br />I could blame it on genetics. I could blame it on emotional eating. I could blame it on health issues. I could deflect blame in myriad ways.<br /><br />But...<br /><br />It all comes down to the fact that I like to eat. I'm a United States Southerner, and my diet has, for most of my life, followed that tradition. <br /><br />Buttered this, deep-fried that, I like to eat, and Southern US comfort foods are my go-to. <br /><br />Something's got to change it and the only thing I have control of is me.<br /><br />I visited a down-to-earth, no-nonsense clinic on Tuesday, met with a dietician and a surgeon. <br /><br />I prefer to avoid the knife. I've seen great success for people who have gone that route, but I've also seen a lot of failure (I work in the medical field helping to diagnose and treat sleep apnea, so a lot of my patients are fighting the same fight I am), and I'm willing to undergo surgery if it comes to that.<br /><br />The doctor and the dietician, however, believe that I can succeed in getting the weight off and keeping it off, and I believe this to be true as well.<br /><br />Now, I've been obese my entire adult life. I carry it well. I'm a large-built individual, and without resulting to legit starvation and purposeful emaciation, I'll never be someone with a 25 BMI (I'm a prime example as to why the BMI is a shitty way to measure weight-related health... My lean body and bone mass, with 0% body fat would currently put me at a 24, so...<br /><br />Anyhow, I have an appointment for the non-surgical weight loss doctor next month, but I'm starting to do some things to kind of jump start my progress and, hopefully, hit the ground running. More water, no greasy foods, less fat, lower calories, that sort of thing. <br /><br />I'm going to post my progress here, for accountability.<br /><br />I prefer not to have advice. We all lose weight at different rates (I, for one, gain and lose at a kind of ridiculous rate), and different things work for different people (for instance, keto was fantastic for me for maintaining weight, but not weight loss... Although many friends have had great success with it when it comes to losing weight). <br /><br />I want to hold myself accountable. I want the community here to hold me accountable. Encouragement is appreciated. \"Wtf are you doing, man?\" when I screw up is perfect. Abuse and ridiculous, however, are not. They don't help, and, while I'm not one for blocking people out-of-hand, this is my health that I'm working on, and I will not let outside influences derail that. Study after study demonstrates that negative reinforcement has a detrimental effect when someone is trying to enact healthy lifestyle changes, and my own struggles have borne that out.
