If we are to survive more than a billion years into the future, then we need to move away from the Earth due to the Sun expanding into a Red Giant. Mars will be too hot, so we can go to the Outer Gas Giants, but ultimately we will need to leave the Solar System behind. With this in mind we must either endure the journey of many thousands of years, or we must create some kind of technology that allows us to go past the speed of light.
