The shrunken hydrangea tree, whose branches once reached way over my head now hang down off a stump maybe 2' high. It was recommended by an \"expert\" we remove it and plant a new one a few years ago. We saw a few sprouts of life still growing off it, so let it be.
It was very lopsided last Summer and few blooms. Ugly would be a fair word to describe it, but still alive. So it stayed. This Summer, it sprouted lots of leaves. After 2 nights of storms where a giant tree's limb fell nearby and barely missed it, flower buds emerged. Last night I saw that the once tall and fairly common hydrangea tree has finally been fully transformed into a beautiful albeit short weeping one.
No longer can you see the hydrangea flashing giant white blooms from the street. No, now you have to take a walk into the garden itself to see it. And when you do, you also get to see the antique Holy Spirit statue from an old Mississippi churchyard watching over the changed tree as well. Perhaps it's not even weeping anymore, but praying.
