"content": "The Doves, Part 2<br />Good morning Friends! The Doves, Part 2.<br />Yesterday (Monday) after early posting, I looked out the window with field glasses and saw the doves were back to the same spot building their nest. Oh no! I thought. But they had renewed energy and my own nest needed me, so other than an occasional look I stayed away. <br />Early afternoon I saw that the blackbirds who think they own the northwest corner of our lot along rivers' edge were beginning to get agitated. The doves nest was on the edge of their turf. Throughout the Summer, all birds sit on the squirrel highway branch- temporarily. If the squirrels careening by don't scare them away the blackbirds do as they circle closer with aggressive fly-bys. <br /><br />The doves kept working at least until mid-afternoon, which was when I went elsewhere. At sunset I closed the umbrella down by that corner. The dove couple was gone. I've seen no sign of them so far today. The poor quality photo below is of a curious squirrel sniffing the remains of their nest around 8 a.m. today.<br />Confession: When I saw the doves returned after my posting yesterday, I thought: maybe they'll do okay- what right did I have to try to steer them away? What a blow hard I am thinking I know where birds should nest.<br />But God does give us a brain to use and and eyes to see. And He gave it to the doves also. They knew the nature of the blackbirds and squirrels, as does any creature living amongst them. The doves erroneously thought they could live in peace amongst them. After just 2 days of trying, the doves wisely moved on. So who's the bird brain? 👩🏻🌾🕊️🪹🐿️🐦⬛",

The Doves Part 1<br />A Sunny Sunday Story<br />Yesterday afternoon as husband listened to Cubs on the radio, I was entertained watching a male dove as he carefully chose sticks, dried stalks and grasses for a nearby nest. He flew his treasure up to his awaiting Mrs. and carefully laid it down at her feet then flew off the find more. She then got busy positioning and tucking in his gift. The videos of her are too obscure to see. Fortunately for them, they noticed my watching them and abandoned that spot- which was my intention. Why?<br /><br />They were building their nest right in the middle of the squirrel's aerial highway. Those funny but often naughty characters would have thought nothing of running the dove's loosely built nest into the ground. Although the Mrs. would have enjoyed her river view there, without a cross beam, any brisk wind from the west would have quickly sent it flying. Where were the squirrels on yesterday's sunny day? Why weren't they already running by, pestering the dove couple? <br />The squirrels were busy pursuing each other into the brush then building or adding to their own nests- nowhere near their highway. <br /><br />The squirrels' antics of chasing each other around the aerial highway encircling our backyard happens after nest building season. To this day I can't tell if they do that for fun or territory. Fortunately, before the Cubbies beat the Mariners 3-2, I saw the doves fly off and choose a tree at the back of the Scripture Rocks Garden.
