Winter Park is a resort and is tucked away off I-70 about 1.5hrs outside of Denver, CO and is now a destination on the Ikon pass.

The legendary Mary Jane!

The mountain is known for it's seven territories and massive area of skiable terrain for all skill levels. Most prominent ( and perhaps intimidating?) is the legendary 'Mary Jane' territory. I will link a great video on how Mary Jane became the mogul capital of the world. While moguls aren't for everyone, and certainly give me some trouble, I can see why they are considered the purest form of skiing. Mary Jane is home to some of the most advanced and expert level terrain on the mountain, but perhaps ironically, is a fantastic and FREE place for beginners to learn. Beginners and families alike can thank Winter Park for a little lift called the Galloping Goose that is absolutely free to ride and serves a couple very gentle green runs at the base of Mary Jane. This is where my daughter skied for the first time and had an absolute blast. (Did I mention it was free? - ski rentals not included) 🟢

Getting to the mountain! 🏔️

Driving to Winter Park? (if not, consider Amtrak's Winter Park Express Ski Train, I hear it's quite the experience - see link below)

To get to Winter Park, from I-70 you will have to take Berthoud pass, so make sure to check CO Trips, or simply check the IsBerthoudPassOpen site. Compared to other big mountain roads I have done (think Pikes Peak or Mt. Evans road) this is light work. Still requires the same caution as any mountain road but just plan ahead, check the weather, and make sure your car (or driver) is ready with winter tires at a minimum.

The Terrain! ⛷️

I found that Winter Park terrain is very diversified and spread out, with a drawback being the time spent walking and crossing the flat areas on skis. I consider myself an intermediate skier and thrive on blues and will challenge blacks with the caution they deserve. One of my favorite runs was Lonesome Whistle, a long winding long blue that is starts by taking the Gondola, Explorer, or Olympia lift and shooting over on Hookup or Whistlestop - both relatively flat green runs. Next to the Olympia lift is the Waffle cabin, where you can grab a freshly made liege waffle with chocolate and cinnamon sugar - a must try and definitely a great lift snack.🧇

🟦 I appreciated Winter Parks intermediate-advanced runs, designated by signs with black diamonds within a blue square - kind of confusing if you have only ever skied at areas with strictly green, blue, and black runs. Some of the intermediate-advanced runs I enjoyed were Hughes and Lower Hughes, which takes you right back to the base area and Gondola, with the option to shoot through a fairly steep black called Norwegian that was quite fun. As a side project- I hope to have more in depth reviews on my favorite runs as I have found it difficult to find good information on what to ski when tackling a new ski area for the first time.

Top insights:

- Utilize public transportation if you can, Winter Park has a well connected free shuttle called 'The Lift\" - it will save you on parking and walking distance to the chairlifts. There is a shuttle to the Winter Park village from Mary Jane as well.

- If you enjoy spring skiing, like a lot of resorts Winter Park offers a special in April that makes it significantly cheaper to ski. ($100/day)

- For lodging, look in Fraser and Granby, both towns are connected on the free public transit and are very accessible to Winter Park. I stayed in Granby at the Inn at Silvercreek which was an older but very affordable and still had plenty of amenities. I will consider staying here again to ski at Granby Ranch (which had already closed for the season when I stayed there.)

- For families and non-skiers, within the center of town in Winter Park (across from the McDonalds) is a free tubing and sledding hill. It has free tubes and sleds generously donated by the community. It also has a playground and is walkable to lots of shops, restaurants, and breweries. I recommend grabbing a loaded chicago dog at Fraser Valley Hot Dog and a craft beer from Hideaway Park Brewery.

Check out my personal channel @garchibald or the Snow Minds group channel for pictures and video from the trip.

Helpful and related video links:

🚆Amtrak Ski Train - https://youtu.be/9HP80VcLmlQ

⛷️Mogul Skiing at Mary Jane - https://youtu.be/g0Y2oi80QVo

🏂Winter Park Resort review by Jonathan Buckhouse - https://youtu.be/3w2RQr7vGK8

https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/1494387188228427783?referrer=garchibald", "to": [ "https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#Public" ], "cc": [ "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/1494360005866950660/followers" ], "tag": [ { "type": "Mention", "href": "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/1494360005866950660", "name": "@garchibald" } ], "url": "https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/1495504674294337544", "published": "2023-04-19T19:21:38+00:00", "source": { "content": "Winter Park Resort ~ \"First Thoughts\" ~ 3 days (2023)\n\nThis is my first \"First Thoughts\" post and I wanted to start by sharing my most recent ski trip - the highlights were the warm spring skiing, teaching my 3 year old daughter to ski for the first time, and getting fresh snow in April!\n\nThese posts will be a rundown of mountain info, favorite runs, and insights.\n\nHaving lived in Colorado before, I had always wanted to check out Winter Park but had never had the right opportunity (or right pass).
