"content": "This story of the Churning of the Ocean is full of spiritual symbolism, revolving around the around the concepts of Purification and Transformation. The Sanskrit word “Manthana” has several meanings: “to churn”, “to beat”, “to kill”, and also, “to rub”, as in, to rub sticks together to make a Fire. Fire is itself a mode of Purification, and a crucial ingredient of worship, both symbolically and literally. The Fire is both the ritual bonfire and the element of Heat, called Tapas, which burns up Karmic impurities. This concept of Purification is reiterated with the Symbolism of Churning Milk to make butter. Through the act of Churning, one transforms, the milk into Ghee, the Ghee itself is Golden in color, just like the Fire, and just like the Sun. The implication of Samudra Manthana is that the path to Immortality is a process of Purification, using Tapas (the inner heat) to burn up one’s Karma.",

Viṣṇu grabbed it first and gave it to the Gods, but then the Demon Rahu got a hold of it as well. Viṣṇu cut off his head, but now his head is immortal. Thus Rahu periodically swallows the Sun and the Moon, causing the eclipses.
