Colonialism was an attempt at spreading genuine philosophy but could only do so in the religious mode. Hegel declared himself a Christian but Christianity was seen as the driver of much horror and colonialism. Tremendous oppression and suffering occurred when agents of history tried to implement the ideas of their faith. From the crusades to the British, French and Spanish. Each one imposed their sensuousness and culture upon the others crushing them instead of self-recognizing the universal logic already immanent within each culture and bringing it out from within. The limit of religion is that its representations of the universals are made finite by the sensuous symbols that are used to approximate them, and this finitude is what takes up time and space and conflicts with other sensuous certainties. But genuine philosophy sublates religion and transcends any particular sensuousness into the religion of philosophy ie. to encompass all modes of sensuousness under one supersensuous essence. This essence is not itself sensuous but is in the mode of pure thought itself. It does not have to oppress or force a changing of the symbols of the cultures of which it engages but self-recognizes itself already immanent in them and brings the dialectic of the symbols into a fulfillment of their truth in a way that the spirit inside all agents of history can recognize and determine for themselves. This is what colonialism could not do because it could not grasp the logic in its supersensuous purity as the essence of genuine philosophy. It develops further into a steady recognition to the emptiness behind the appearance of things. The emptiness of consumerism, of materialism by itself. The endless accumulation of wealth and material possessions cannot seem to fill the gaps and feelings of emptiness celebrities and others feel when they have it all. When the structures they give themselves are no longer fulfilling but fall into a bad infinite. A repetition of the same thing in different colours. The movement of the spirit begins to move past mere sense-certainty and perception to a deeper understanding of the dialectical forces behind the illusory being of things. The Buddhists aim to develop this understanding by driving one outside of their ordinary minds and into an existential crisis. This existential crisis does not lead to the anxiety of existentialism but into a new kind of liberation from even self-structuring. There is a harmony and ideality in the world itself of which we are a part. When we align our self-determining reason with such pure thoughts we grasp the essence behind the illusion through the emptiness. But Hegel does not stop at this pure being and being-within-self. What is implicit and beautiful as the intuition of the bodhisattva and Hindus becomes explicit further for Hegel. Spirit develops past the existential and stable emptiness and into a complete logic which includes them as moments. It circles back on itself through the continuity of the stableness of pure emptiness and the void, a thoughtless thoughtfulness of self-determination in flow with the universe thinking itself through us. This is truly authentic being and in the pure mode of thought develops into absolute atheism: the non-idolization of which Buddha spoke from Nirvana.
