Often, meeting one child's needs is at the detriment of another.<br /><br />While taking my Ed degree I was all for inclusive <a href=\"https://www.minds.com/search?f=top&amp;t=all&amp;q=education\" title=\"#education\" class=\"u-url hashtag\" target=\"_blank\">#education</a> (where there are no special needs classes, all students are in the same class). In theory it seems great - kids become more tolerant, they learn from each other. In practice, however, inclusive education makes for suboptimal learning for all. I had to learn this the hard way and watch ALL my students struggle. Those with special needs absolutely suffered the most. For many, the <a href=\"https://www.minds.com/search?f=top&amp;t=all&amp;q=learning\" title=\"#learning\" class=\"u-url hashtag\" target=\"_blank\">#learning</a> environment of a large class was truly distressing.<br /><br />Note: yes, we need to prepare <a href=\"https://www.minds.com/search?f=top&amp;t=all&amp;q=children\" title=\"#children\" class=\"u-url hashtag\" target=\"_blank\">#children</a> for the adult world where they have to operate in uncomfortable and challenging situations. The very first phonics lessons actually happen when your baby is babbling and exploring sound production.<br /><br />We read and write using mainly lower case letters. This is one of the reasons they should be taught first. The other is that, I have found, when children learn upper case first, it is very difficult to break the all caps writing.<br /><br />When I introduce a new phoneme, we start with Old McDonald Had a Farm.
