And while I can say that much of what he describes in terms of what’s keeping students silent is true, that does not discount the fact that there are certain perspectives which are verboten in the college classroom, and the students (and faculty) know it, and that this is indeed worsening the problem.<br /><br />As an independent myself, I make it very clear that ALL perspectives - and I do mean all - are welcome in my classroom. And yet, those students that are more conservative leaving - even if only on a single issue - will only share those views with me one on one. They tell me, in my office hours or their personal essays, that they have appreciated the exposure to more liberal leaning views, that it has opened their minds and helped them to see more nuance in other “sides” of the argument. But they still feel excluded and marginalized from expressing their own experiences and opinions whenever they do not happen support a rather far left-leaning ideology.<br /><br />I, too, am prevented from having certain discussions with my colleagues that I would have with ease with people from every other area of my life, for fear of unfavorable opinions festering against me and having consequences for my career, either immediately or down the line. <br /><br />I do not think that we should discount or minimize these very serious problems that exist within academia, which is supposed to be an institution - THE institution - of ideas, regardless of what our own personal biases may cause us to perceive as conservative media hyperbole.
