What I will hope for, where I said \"may this not be a harbinger of doom\", this is the most orchestral album Thyrfing have made to date. Fourteen years ago, Turisas did much the same thing with \"Stand Up And Fight\", and then followed it up with the most catastrophic act of self-sabotage since Celtic Frost farted out \"Cold Lake\". I have *never* forgotten that. And then, there was line-up drama, as founder member Kimmy Sjölund quit, Jocke Kristensson shifted from drums to bass, the vacant drumstool was filled by Dennis Ekdahl.

In light of all the above, strike me down with a feather from the world's tiniest bird if Thyrfing didn't rescue their reputation out of the blue. Barely had their new members settled in than \"De Ödeslösa\" was released, and it was as if the previous line-up realised they'd gone a bit too \"dark and gloomy\" for the last couple of albums. For want of a better word, this one is more \"upbeat\" than its three predecessors and is all the better for it. Hence, as introduced two albums back, I was once again \"gripped\". The key seems to be a return to a sound closer to that of \"Urkraft\" without actually *being it*; \"Farsotstider\" and \"Hels Vite\" both had the occasional in the direction of the \"stompy death metal\" part of the early days; \"De Ödeslösa\" has *loads* of links to the past, and has given Peter Löf a lot more to do with his keyboards on top of that.

The result is an album that is the most worthy successor to \"Urkraft\", 13 years after its release. While I could have picked at least five of the eight tracks to showcase, the final choice was between \"Fordom\" and \"Veners Förfall\" – but I went for the former because it has a striking similarity to \"The Voyager\", from \"Vansinnesvisor\", only with a much richer and cleaner production than Örjan Örnkloo's muddy mis-step, and it shows what that 2002 album could have been.... if only. Also, those keyboards... is that a \"parp\" I heard in there, straight off of \"Valdr Galga\"? Welcome home, it's been too long, we've missed you.

Much like the Vikings sailing to Vinland, it took them a while, and there were storms along the way, but they got there in the end.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AP5YRqOLt5M",

"content": "#itmusthavebeenyears - Episode 3, Part 8 of 9\nThyrfing – \"Fordom\", from \"De Ödeslösa\" (2013)\nAlso recommended: \"Mot Helgrind\", \"Veners Förfäll\", \"Relik\", \"Vindöga\"\nAlbum ranking: 3/8\n\n#metalmonday sails the good longship Thyrfing into the harbour of redemption.\n\nI was worried that I'd lost them, not just after \"Hels Vite\", but also with the second time I saw them live, in Osnabrück – during which, it was very obvious Peter Löf had nothing to do for half the set, and Jens Rydén pretended to slit his wrists and his throat like an emo kid during \"Far åt Helvete\". I have *never* forgotten that. And then, there was line-up drama, as founder member Kimmy Sjölund quit, Jocke Kristensson shifted from drums to bass, the vacant drumstool was filled by Dennis Ekdahl.\n\nIn light of all the above, strike me down with a feather from the world's tiniest bird if Thyrfing didn't rescue their reputation out of the blue. Bonus-guitarist Henrik Svegsjö left, so Patrik Lindgren reverted to doubling up on guitars (briefly; Fredrik Hernborg was the official replacement but he only arrived after the album was finished). The major change was behind the microphone; while doing some work on the side for Moonsorrow on the shatteringly brilliant \"Viides Luku: Hävitetty\" (although I still have no idea *where*, even after listening to that album 200-and-something times...), Thomas Väänänen quit and was replaced by Jens Rydén, formerly of Naglfar. If I hadn't been told, I'd never have noticed. Iron Maiden swapping out Bruce Dickinson for Blaze Bayley, this was not.

When I mentioned albums not \"gripping me\" last time, the biggest problem with \"Hels Vite\" is that it's the one that's drifted the furthest from \"Urkraft\". For instance, \"Från Stormens Öga\" is the one track that sounds like it could belong on a previous album... and it'd be \"Farsotstider\", only once place above this one. There was a deliberate slowing-down of the sound, to the point where there are only seven tracks on the album and it's still 52 minutes long, and keyboards were reduced so much that Peter Löf would be standing around like a lemon on stage doing nothing when one of these lengthy songs was played live. How could I describe it? \"Slow and grindy black metal\" implies Darkthrone, which this is not. \"Long and epic viking/heathen metal\" implies Moonsorrow, which this is also not...

...but therein lies salvation. If anything, they should have made a determined attempt to go fully down the Moonsorrow path and make a four or five track album at 10-12 minutes each, because when they came closest to that, they pulled out a blinder; \"Tre Vintrar – Två Solar\" is not only the best track on the album by a mile (to the point where this was an even easier choice than \"Farsotstider\"), it's the best album closer they've ever written.

Remember, though, there are no *bad* albums; this is not \"Cold Lake\", \"St. Anger\" or \"Illud Divinum Insanus\".
