"content": "many decades ago, i trained seriously in ballet...though my only claim to fame at that extremely difficult endeavor was getting my butt kicked in class at David Howard's studio in 80's NYC, during my (mercifully brief) starving artist apprenticeship in that town.<br /><br />Principal NYCB dancers were reputed to drop in to Howard's class from time to time, & while i still feel sheepish admitting this, at that point i was becoming disillusioned with dance, and my main reason for taking class at Howard's studio was a fantasy that one day Suzanne Farrell might drop in. <br /><br />i knew i was technically out of my depth...and i had some ill-defined hope that Farrell's presence in class might inspire me in some way that would raise the barre on my flagging confidence or limited technique (bad pun, i know. indulge me).<br /><br />looking back, i think that fantasy helped me make peace with the truth that neither ballet nor New York City were meant to be my permanent home.<br /><br />i eventually broke off my relationship with ballet, left New York, and took a circuitous route into what has been a lifelong love affair with architecture, and a fascination with the psychology of the built environment, a research interest I developed during graduate school, one which enabled me to develop an extraordinarily interesting and wide-ranging design practice informed by the work of Christopher Alexander, Carl Jung, James Hillman, Lois Kahn, Frank LLoyd Wright, & Wilfred Bion...to name a few.<br /><br />where am i going with this...well, with much experience and hindsight, i have come to understand how closely the practices of architecture and ballet resemble one another.<br /><br />architecture, commonly thought of as \"things [e.g. buildings/landscapes] put together by people\" is -- from my perspective -- more accurately described as a dance with the consciousness of many, through which material form emerges.<br /><br />ballet, increasingly culturally presented (post-Balanchine) as a kind of \"artistic athleticism\" is, from my point of view more accurately described as a type of kinesthetic sand painting through which form also [fleetingly] emerges.<br /><br />Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is credited with the idea that \"music is liquid architecture; architecture is frozen music.\"<br /><br />I'm afraid I must respectfully disagree with the Maestro. <br /><br />From a quantum perspective, it is dance that is \"liquid architecture\", and architecture -- if you understand the process well -- which is \"frozen dance\".<br /><br />case in point: if Yeonseo Choi's Aurora Variation at the YAGP 2022 Prix de Lausanne finals were architecture, it would BE St. Basil's Basilica. <br /><br />And if St. Basil's Basilica were dance, it would BE Yeonseo's variation.<br /><br /><a href=\"https://youtu.be/kCdpOXciJAQ\" target=\"_blank\">https://youtu.be/kCdpOXciJAQ</a>",
