I know some of you enjoy the ‘how’ as much as the resulting image so here is a wee step-by-step montage.<br />I start with a photographic image which I reflect on the computer before printing out. I then grid up a piece of ordinary creamcore mountboard, dividing it into four squares. I do the same to the print out and then freehand draw the image onto the board. By using this method, imperfections are introduced which remove it from being ‘too photographic’ but keep me on track for a recognisable location. <br />A collagraph print is basically one produced by inking up a collage board and can create prints which have a similar vibe to a tonal aquatint etching. The tones are created by using collage materials with different levels of roughness or smoothness. Rough materials will trap more ink which glue and sellotape resist the ink to create white or pale areas. This piece is quite minimal and uses two types of textured wallpaper, sellotape, masking tape and glue. Much of the detail is created by scoring and peeling the surface of the board. The interior of the board is very fluffy and will create nice dark tones. <br />Many of my pieces require two collagraph plates, the under one being made of a few peeled areas which will hold fields of colour for the detailed top plate to sit one. Here the underplate creates the pink and turquoise areas and the detailed plate is essentially inked up monochrome. When the two plates have been constructed, they are sealed with a shellack based varnish (I use a button polish made by a company called Fiddes) and are then ready to be inked up. <br />I use my dirty bottom method to register the two plates, skimming the under edges of the first plate with a touch of ink so that when it goes theough the press on a piece of newsheet it will leave an impression of its location. Keeping the watercolour printing paper and the newsheet trapped in the press at one end, the plates can be swapped and the top plate will superimpose onto the first print. With guests arriving on Good Friday, I am mindful that the house may need a bit of a seeing to, bedding will need to be changed…bathrooms cleaned…and the tiffin I have promised to make for the village Fayre has to be squeezed in somewhere. I feel I need to make a contribution having signed up for the free Hub Club fleece for Volunteers! It will all get done…and then ‘relax’. <br />I am excited to show our guests the area and I suspect as well as exploring our own beaches and coastal walks we will head back down to the Lighthouse at the Mull of Galloway which we visited when viewing the house.
