It's probably my favorite indie book I've read this year. It's a stand-alone story, but there are more books from the author set in the same universe.

I read The Eye of the Universe way back in June. I still often think about it five months later. I suppose this book could be categorized as \"space sci-fi survival horror.\" It is grim, harrowing, and extremely atmospheric. It has amazing moments of deadpan humor, poignancy, and hope.

Here's a quote from my original review:
\"I didn't understand, at first, why the main character goes through the trouble of lugging a dead guy in a wheelchair with him everywhere he goes. If you're trying to survive on a crippled space cruiser, exploring every deck looking for food, supplies, and other survivors, it seems like it would be a lot easier if you didn't have to pull a body in a wheelchair up the maintenance shafts with ropes.\"

Keeping that quote in mind, here is how my mental state as a reader progressed as the story itself progressed:

1. Dude, leave the dead body behind. It's slowing you down.
2. Ok, maybe leave him behind for a little while when you need to, but come back and get him.
3. Ok, leaving him behind then coming back could be weird and creepy—what if he falls over, or moves in some way and you wouldn't know how, or someone else finds him, etc. Just keep him in sight.
4. No way. You and Ziggy are buds. I can't imagine you leaving him behind. He comes with you, always.

The author accomplishes this mainly through the conversations between the (unnamed) main character and Ziggy, the dead guy. I won't reveal HOW they have conversations, but it's pretty brilliant. The crazy thing is, the two characters aren't REALLY talking to each other, I mean they CAN'T, but for me as the reader it BECOMES a real conversation.

The ending is spot-on and is probably the main reason I still think about the story months later.

Special thanks to @talexratcliffe for featuring The Eye of the Universe in a video review—that's how I discovered the book.

You can buy The Eye of the Universe here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08C96175M

@KirkpattieCake #mindsauthors #scifiindies #scifibooks",

"content": "No man can have a right to impose an unchosen obligation, an unrewarded duty or an involuntary servitude on another man. There can be no such thing as “the right to enslave.”

We have reached the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.

Our rights – to think, speak, publish, worship, defend ourselves, travel, own property, be left alone – are natural to our humanity.

These rights preexisted the government. Their source is our humanity. Government does not grant these rights. Rather, its primary purpose – as stated in the Declaration of Independence, its sole purpose – is to protect these rights.

Kleptocracy : a society whose leaders make themselves rich and powerful by stealing from the rest of the people

Kakistocracy: a system of government which is run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.

If some men are entitled by right to the products of the work of others, it means that those others are deprived of rights and condemned to slave labor.

The US is a #KLEPTOCRACY not a Republic. There is a two-tier system of criminal justice in this country; one for the normal people and one for the politically connected, and they can do anything they want.

Politicians favor authoritarianism over capitalism and monopoly over competition. They have directly created monopolies (and oligopolies) in all major industrial sectors by imposing policies favoring preferred corporations and preferred special interests. There is no Capitalism only #Corporatism. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion – when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing – when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors – when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don't protect you against them, but protect them against you – when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice – you may know that your society is doomed.

The right to property means that a man has the right to take the economic actions necessary to earn property, to use it and to dispose of it; it does not mean that others must provide him with property. If some men are entitled by right to the products of the work of others, it means that those others are deprived of rights and condemned to slave labor.

Any alleged “right” of one man, which necessitates the violation of the rights of another, is not and cannot be a right.

No man can have a right to impose an unchosen obligation, an unrewarded duty or an involuntary servitude on another man. There can be no such thing as “the right to enslave.”

The \"right\" to bear arms as recognized in the
2nd Amendment - is a right found in the First Law of Nature,
the right to life, the right of self-preservation.

Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual). ~Ayn Rand

Rulers and Ruled

So, then, let us consider the situation confronting all of us in our daily lives. In every modern state, some group of people — usually a fairly small group of people — purport to have the authority to command the mass of the population to do this or that or to refrain from doing this or that. They do not possess such a right by virtue of some special divine gift, still less by virtue of their manifestly superior intelligence or moral virtue since sad experience shows that our erstwhile leaders, by and large, are no better in general than the rest of us and are often, sadly, much worse. By what right, then, do they claim the authority to command us, to make laws for us that govern many, if not most, of the significant aspects of our lives?

https://mises.org/library/indefensibility-political-representation
#minds #freespeech #libertarian #anarchy #freedom",

"content": "No man can have a right to impose an unchosen obligation, an unrewarded duty or an involuntary servitude on another man. There can be no such thing as “the right to enslave.” \n\nWe have reached the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.\n\nOur rights – to think, speak, publish, worship, defend ourselves, travel, own property, be left alone – are natural to our humanity.\n\nThese rights preexisted the government. Their source is our humanity. Government does not grant these rights. Rather, its primary purpose – as stated in the Declaration of Independence, its sole purpose – is to protect these rights.\n\nKleptocracy : a society whose leaders make themselves rich and powerful by stealing from the rest of the people\n\nKakistocracy: a system of government which is run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens.\n\nIf some men are entitled by right to the products of the work of others, it means that those others are deprived of rights and condemned to slave labor.\n\nThe US is a #KLEPTOCRACY not a Republic. There is a two-tier system of criminal justice in this country; one for the normal people and one for the politically connected, and they can do anything they want.\n\nPoliticians favor authoritarianism over capitalism and monopoly over competition. \n\nThe right to property means that a man has the right to take the economic actions necessary to earn property, to use it and to dispose of it; it does not mean that others must provide him with property. If some men are entitled by right to the products of the work of others, it means that those others are deprived of rights and condemned to slave labor.\n\nAny alleged “right” of one man, which necessitates the violation of the rights of another, is not and cannot be a right.\n\nNo man can have a right to impose an unchosen obligation, an unrewarded duty or an involuntary servitude on another man. There can be no such thing as “the right to enslave.” \n\nThe \"right\" to bear arms as recognized in the\n2nd Amendment - is a right found in the First Law of Nature,\nthe right to life, the right of self-preservation.\n\nIndividual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual). ~Ayn Rand\n\nRulers and Ruled\n\nSo, then, let us consider the situation confronting all of us in our daily lives.
