Although this is considered a niche style nowadays, the influence of military uniforms on clothing in general has been massive. In fact, the western men’s suit is an adaptation of a military uniform. Militant chic simply takes this trend and turns it up a notch, with jackets, shirts, boots, etc that could be straight from a military uniform, modern or ancient.

In fact, why not wear something that literally IS straight from a military uniform? You see all those people on the banner for this post? Four of them are from ads and fashion magazines. The other one is me, sporting a piece I bought at my local army surplus store for $4, in brand new condition. I’m the one in the blue shirt, BTW, which is the $4 piece in question, although maybe you could already tell by the less than professional lighting or the sloppy job I did blurring the background. My point is that if you want to add a military flair to your outfit, instead of buying expensive designer brands you can consider going straight to the source. There are a wealth of uniforms and accessories from nations around the world, stretching back literally hundreds of years to choose from, to give your wardrobe a unique touch.

Why try militaria?

The clothes make the man, as they say. Or the woman, to be inclusive. Military uniforms are designed to be visually impressive, stylish, imposing, and versatile. They radiate power and discipline. Militaries around the world are phasing out parts of their uniform all the time, soldiers retire and sell their stuff, there’s always lots on the market, though what’s plentiful or rare is always changing. The hunt itself is an adventure. You’re not just selecting a wardrobe, you’re also a collector of historical artifacts.

It’s a bold look, especially if you want to go all in on some of the more eccentric items, but if you’ve read this far, you’re probably already interested.

Where to start:

Army surplus stores, as I already mentioned above, are great. The big ones have a huge selection of both uniform parts and you can also pick up some hunting, survivalism or homesteading equipment on the trip, if you’re into any of those things. Getting the right piece that’s both in good condition and your size can be a bit of trick, but sometimes you can get lucky and get some phenomenal deals. Even the standard prices are about as low priced as you can expect for a similar item of clothing, and are usually built a lot sturdier.

If you don’t live near a surplus store, or just need more options, especially older stuff, it’s tough to beat eBay. Searching militaria will bring up all the clothing and accessories you can imagine, and you can narrow it down by country, article of clothing, and more.

military1st.eu/clothing has a good selection of modern US and British stuff, while militaryharbor.com has large selection of vintage recreations, mainly from WW2 Germany, but some from WW1 and Japan as well. Kommandostore.com doesn’t have the largest collection of uniform pieces, but it does sport an impressive collection of boots, and some items that you might not be able to find anywhere else.

One final thing to consider: women will have a harder time finding surplus gear in their size, since most military uniforms are made for men. On the upside, society usually gives women a lot more leeway to experiment with their clothes, so you can go further outside the box and worry less about whether a certain uniform piece is too outlandish. If you know how to sew and make alterations, that can also open up a whole new world of possibilities.

That should be enough to get you started. After that, it’s up to you to dig around to find what you want. Sometimes you’ll be looking for a specific article of clothing, sometimes even from a specific country and era, but sometimes you may just want to browse. Hopefully this group can serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for you if you need it, and you can provide the same inspiration and guidance to others with your own posts.

Happy hunting!",
