Even if you are completely comfortable with yourself and are a good conversationalist, the idea of putting your best self forward and being vulnerable with a stranger who may become the love of your life is, well, daunting. If you're in the market for a relationship—whether it's a casual fling or something long-term—consider this your guide to modern dating.

We've compiled the six essential rules when it comes to finding what you're looking for, so put your stress on the shelf and enjoy yourself when you're on the dating circuit.

(01 of 06)
Put Yourself Out There

We know meeting people can be stressful, but try to overcome any negative emotions you have surrounding dating because the more you put yourself out there, the better your chances are to meet someone you really like. If you're not into dating apps, try a different avenue, like asking your friends to fix you up. You could even scope the scene at your favorite places, which increases your odds of finding someone with shared interests. So if you love yoga, see if you find anyone in the class attractive and talk to them afterward.

02 of 06
Keep an Open Mind

Being open-minded is perhaps the most important rule on this list. After all, what do you have to lose by giving someone a chance?

03 of 06
Stay Safe

Another thing to keep in mind: your safety is the most important when dating. If you don't feel comfortable or safe, do not worry about staying to be polite. Definitely get out of there. If you're meeting up with someone from a dating app (a stranger), we recommend letting a friend know where you are, meeting your date in a public place, and staying clearheaded, so that you can make good choices from start to finish.

If you want to take the edge off a first date, suggest a place you've been to before so that you at least feel comfortable in your surroundings.

04 of 06
Set Your Own Pace

When you're dating someone new, it's important to move the relationship forward at your own pace. We don't necessarily subscribe to society's long-standing and unspoken rule of waiting a specific amount of time before being intimate with your new partner, but we do believe that waiting is okay if you aren't completely sure that intimacy is something you're ready for yet.

05 of 06
Remember: Forming Connections Takes Time

Speaking of setting your own pace, take some of the stress off yourself and remember that finding the perfect person for you won’t happen overnight. So rather than rushing the process and settling on a partner who doesn’t meet all of your needs, it’s in your best interest to put in the time it takes to date more people and up your chances of finding the one who makes you happiest.

06 of 06
Maintain a Positive Attitude

We get it, you can't be positive all the time. However, when it comes to dating, try your best to keep any negativity at bay because if you go on a first date thinking it will be a disaster, it probably will be. Think of it this way: If you go out for drinks with someone you weren't that into, it was just two or so hours of your life, right? However, if you're on your way to a first date thinking, \"I'm going to laugh a lot, order my favorite cocktail, and have a great time even if there's no second date,\" you'll have plenty of fun. bad. Divorce is even worse.

When a relationship ends, you may experience depression, anxiety, insomnia, skin flare-ups, aches and pains, drastic weight loss or gain, or illness.

One cardiologist reported seeing a greater incidence of heart attacks in people who’d recently broken up.

Breaking up can literally break your heart.

[BUT HAVE BREAKUPS BEEN GIVEN A BAD RAP?]

Is it really true that the only worthwhile relationships are those that last forever?

Ty Tashiro and Patricia Frazier from the University of Minnesota believe that we’ve overlooked the possibility of achieving \"positive life changes following relationship breakups.\"

In a 2003 study of broken-hearted undergraduates, they found evidence that breakups spurred personal growth, particularly in women.

[HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?]

You broke up with someone you really liked.

Determined to prove that he made a huge mistake by letting you go, you embarked on a campaign to become a \"new you.\"

You started an exercise program, bought new clothes, and filled your life with a whirl of social activities.

Even though thoughts of your ex intruded at times, you forcibly kept your mind on the future and your amazing life ahead.

[YOU REFUSED TO LET HIM MAKE YOU SAD ANY MORE.]

It’s very possible that this new life you created for yourself is better than the old one in every way.

Which means that the breakup wasn’t a bad thing, but rather something good.

Breaking up can change your life for the better.

In the breakups=bad and relationships=good equation, it’s easy to forget that not all relationships have a positive impact on your life.

[HE MAY NOT BE THE BEST INFLUENCE.]

Even though you may love someone very much and treasure his presence in your life, he may not be the best influence.

Having a partner who likes eating pizza, drinking beer, and watching television on his time off can impact your health, if you choose to join him in those activities.

A partner who is often angry or negative can increase your stress levels.

[YOUR PARTNER CAN ALSO INFLUENCE WHETHER OR NOT YOU PURSUE YOUR DREAMS.]

If he thinks your career goals are silly or unrealistic, or if he thinks it’s a waste of money to go back to school, you may put your dreams on the back burner.

It’s hard to see all the ways in which your choice of partner is affecting your life until the relationship ends and you’re free again.

As scary as being on your own may seem, being single gives you the chance to rediscover who you are.

[THE SILVER LINING]

Rediscovering yourself is part of the secret for getting over a breakup.

You can eat what you want, listen to your own music, and watch what you want on television, even if no one else shares your tastes.

You can spend your free time exactly as you like. You don’t have to change for anyone.

No wonder Tashiro and Frazier found that women grow so much after a breakup.

Relationships, as wonderful as they feel, can be limiting. Divorce is even worse.\n\nWhen a relationship ends, you may experience depression, anxiety, insomnia, skin flare-ups, aches and pains, drastic weight loss or gain, or illness.\n\nOne cardiologist reported seeing a greater incidence of heart attacks in people who’d recently broken up.\n\nBreaking up can literally break your heart.\n\n\n\n[BUT HAVE BREAKUPS BEEN GIVEN A BAD RAP?]\n\nIs it really true that the only worthwhile relationships are those that last forever?\n\nTy Tashiro and Patricia Frazier from the University of Minnesota believe that we’ve overlooked the possibility of achieving \"positive life changes following relationship breakups.\"\n\nIn a 2003 study of broken-hearted undergraduates, they found evidence that breakups spurred personal growth, particularly in women.\n\n\n\n\n[HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW?]\n\nYou broke up with someone you really liked.\n\nDetermined to prove that he made a huge mistake by letting you go, you embarked on a campaign to become a \"new you.\"\n\nYou started an exercise program, bought new clothes, and filled your life with a whirl of social activities.\n\nEven though thoughts of your ex intruded at times, you forcibly kept your mind on the future and your amazing life ahead.\n\n\n\n\n[YOU REFUSED TO LET HIM MAKE YOU SAD ANY MORE.]\n\nIt’s very possible that this new life you created for yourself is better than the old one in every way.\n\nWhich means that the breakup wasn’t a bad thing, but rather something good.\n\nBreaking up can change your life for the better.\n\nIn the breakups=bad and relationships=good equation, it’s easy to forget that not all relationships have a positive impact on your life.\n\n\n\n\n[HE MAY NOT BE THE BEST INFLUENCE.]\n\nEven though you may love someone very much and treasure his presence in your life, he may not be the best influence.\n\nHaving a partner who likes eating pizza, drinking beer, and watching television on his time off can impact your health, if you choose to join him in those activities.\n\nA partner who is often angry or negative can increase your stress levels.\n\n\n\n\n[YOUR PARTNER CAN ALSO INFLUENCE WHETHER OR NOT YOU PURSUE YOUR DREAMS.]\n\nIf he thinks your career goals are silly or unrealistic, or if he thinks it’s a waste of money to go back to school, you may put your dreams on the back burner.\n\nIt’s hard to see all the ways in which your choice of partner is affecting your life until the relationship ends and you’re free again.\n\nAs scary as being on your own may seem, being single gives you the chance to rediscover who you are.\n\n\n\n\n[THE SILVER LINING]\n\nRediscovering yourself is part of the secret for getting over a breakup.\n\nYou can eat what you want, listen to your own music, and watch what you want on television, even if no one else shares your tastes.\n\nYou can spend your free time exactly as you like. You don’t have to change for anyone.\n\nNo wonder Tashiro and Frazier found that women grow so much after a breakup.\n\nRelationships, as wonderful as they feel, can be limiting. Finding yourself single again can be self-empowering.\n\nPerhaps breakups aren’t the demon everyone has made them out to be.\n\n\n\n\n[PERHAPS BREAKUPS ARE THE WISEST TEACHERS]\n\nYou might even say that it’s worth getting into a relationship that doesn’t last, because of the self-knowledge you’ll gain from the experience.\n\nEven if you had a crystal ball, would you still say yes to those relationships that ended badly?\n\nCan you think of any benefits you experienced from breaking up that you wouldn’t have got any other way?\n\n\n\n\n\nSingle Again? ...\n\n...
