I had read this once before as a child in 1999 because I was trying to understand the things that lead to Nazi Germany, as I had recently decided to become an expert on history wouldn't you know. This was probably due to the propaganda of social studies classes, movies and of course news media. My 12 year old self had absolutely no comprehension of what I was reading at the time. Of course I understand the flow of events and the conflicts as they occurred, but not the economic principles that were being discussed.

My father explained enough to me at that age for me to know that these principles were important to learn about, but of course was not educated himself to teach me how our current understanding of capitalism worked let alone things like Laissez-faire Capitalism. He also had tried to read things like Atlas Shrugged but told me he could not get through it and did not know anything about anarchism or any other political ideology. The extent of his knowledge was from medium-sized city museums and the history channel. We had a few books around the house but most of the things I learned I had to hunt down myself on the early internet. He knew that the history taught to children in schools (including his own Lutheran schools) was far from accurate and encouraged me to explore this early on in whatever way I saw fit.

This unfortunately came to a quick halt due too issues in my child hood that you will be able to read about later elsewhere.

Fast forward to 2005, at 18 I am re-entering society from a very extended stay with the state. I have managed to stay ahead of the curve regarding credits and am still able to finish out my senior year, and even a semester early. It is critical that you understand that I was ready to check out at this point in life. The next 4 credits I needed were going to be a breeze, my life was ruined and I would be looking for a job in 5 months when I was done. That would not be the case thank God, but only because one of the elective course I had chosen was an AP Western Civilization course. I knew I loved history, I knew almost all the dates and names, how could this not be a breeze?

What I did not know is that the teacher was as passionate about the subject as me. We butted heads due to my behavior issues but I was the only person in the class who knew enough coming in to actually conversate and write well about the topic early in the class. This class reignited my love for the topic and sent me on a deep dive again. This time I would learn about the dramatic influence that the \"inner circle\" that served in the Nazi regime would jockey for favor from the Fuhrer would accelerate the mistreatment of the Jews, how conflict with communism was knocking on the door well before the end of the war, and how pivotal (and horrific) Americas handling of the pacific conflict would come to shape the future of the world.

Yet again however my study of this topic would be interrupted again almost immediately in 2006, this time by military service. This service was unimpressive and worth almost no note, except that I learned allot about the mentality of the soldier, and I would meet a group of people who would show me something that ensured I would be locked into learning about this history for the rest of my life.

The unit that I was with was a cavalry unit. 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry 4th BCT, 506th INF. For those of you that are not familiar with military history or have no knowledge of the military at all I know this means nothing to you. That said, most of you have probably seen \"Band of Brothers\". The Ambrose inspired show came out in 2001 and captivated millions. WW2 seen from the stories of the men that fought it in a way we that we had never seen before. And this show followed the men of Easy Company, 506th PIR (Parachute Infantry Regiment), which was a part of what would later become the 506th Infantry Regiment that I was a part of.

And these boys took allot of pride in this history. The 101st Airborne, the god damned Screaming Eagles! They have been a jewel of the Army since their creation. (I'm gonna take a second to give a personal fuck you to any of you 82nd assholes reading this. I love you though.)

In the short time I was there, this pride was almost immediately handed down to me and other junior enlisted by the younger NCO's that mentored us and a copy of the show was lent to me to watch for the first time. It had me hooked within the first episode. How had I missed this book? Why had no one told me about this show before now? To add insult too injury on myself I will also add that I had managed not watch \"Patton\" yet either, I know, for shame. moving on...

If you decide to read (or have already read) other things that I have written then you may already know that my want to join the military was driven by family heritage, a love for my country, and 9/11. I had yet come to terms with the fact that the State as evil, and found myself easily captivated by pro-American media. It would not be until much later that the truth of the middle-eastern conflict would reach me, and of course you can follow most of that back to poor management of the post-war conflicts of the late 40's and 50's.

Why is this important? Am I here to fanboy on movies and books that most the world already knows about without no real point?

I sure fucking hope not...

Fast forward to many years of not sticking to reading or writing, a ton of drug use and head trauma making it difficult to remember the things that I was once an expert in, I found myself coming back to revisiting old books on the subject of Nazi Germany, this time with a massive ability to acquire books I had previously not known about.

\"The Devils Disciples: Hitler's Inner Circle\" by Anthony Read

An amazing deep dive on the men that pulled the levers on the mad mans machine, typically pushing this to disturbing levels in attempts to impress Adolf with their vigor and will to eradicate Jews. I will say... I get it. Not even the staunchest historian WANTS to read this book. It's too damn long, Shirer is one of the driest bastards I've ever read, and again it is too damn long! The audio book is something like 45 hours. And its worth every word. It is one of the most detailed accounts of both the life of Adolf Hitler (partnered with Mein Kampf which I shouldn't even have to talk about at this point honestly) as well as the political/economic strife that lead to the war we all know and love, as well as a decent understanding of the military decisions but we have a different book for that.

\"The Economic Consequences of the Peace\" by John Maynard Keynes (1919).

Now, this book is essentially the same premise as \"Nation, State, and Economics\" and was written within a few months of it even, however it takes a much more focused look on the details of the Treaty of Versailles and the key components of its impact on Germany as well as provides a slightly different economic viewpoint in regard to the whole thing.

\"The Third Reich Trilogy\" written by Richard J. evans.

Published between 2003 and 2008, these three books detail every aspect of Nazi history in a very amazing way that may be easier to read for most people than \"Rise and Fall\" and if you are just a military history fan the 3rd book \"Third Reich at War\" is a must buy for you.

Circling back to the point of this now.

In the beginning of my middle age (33) I have found myself studying liberty, economics, and anarchism.
