"content": "Back before Persona became all that there is to Atlus, the Shin Megami Tensei series was the company's flagship game series. Not only did it feature some of the most challenging and thought provoking RPGs of the past several decades, but it has branched off into different sub-series, each exploring a different narrative or gameplay design. Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga, Strange Journey, and of course the aforementioned Persona series all spawned off of the core SMT formula, but there is one sub-series that is the focus of today's topic, and that is Atlus' take on the SRPG formula in Devil Survivor. (And yes, I know the two games original released on the DS, but they had enhanced ports on the 3DS so they count because I said so.)

What stands out with Devil Survivor over the other SRPGs on this list is that it mixes SRPG movement and positioning with a more traditional RPG battle system. You move your characters in squads of three (one human, two demons) to fight similarly comprised enemy squads, but once you are in striking range the game switches to a Turn-Based RPG fight where, in the usual SMT fashion, if you land criticals or hit enemy weaknesses you earn extra turns. And while the game is designed so that every mechanic can work for OR against you in a fair and predictable manner, the battles are of course designed to be as brutally hard as possible with every advantage possible being given to your enemy, leaving you scrambling to make headway. And I love it.

However what makes the games the most fascinating is the story. Unlike most SRPGs where kingdoms are at war with each other, Devil Survivor takes ordinary everyday high school students and drop them into an apocalypse that they must fight to survive. Death is around every corner, and some deaths are predicted ahead of time. In gameplay this is reflected in a time limit as each event and battle you take part in moves time forward, and some events are time sensitive. If you don't make it in time, someone close to you might die, and doing the \"right thing\" might be the hardest thing to do.

As mentioned above there are two Devil Survivor games with each game having a 3DS port (Overclocked for the original, and Record Breaker for the sequel), these ports not only look better than their DS counterpart, but also features full voice acting as well as additional content past the previous version's ending, so the 3DS versions are the ones to get. Now between the original and the sequel, while I do appreciate the major gameplay improvements of the sequel, I have to give it to the original for having the superior story. Not that DS2 had a bad story, it's just that it doesn't have the same hook that the original did.

Seriously, both Devil Survivor are amazing games and definitely both deserve a spot in everyone's 3DS collection. In fact Devil Survivor Overclocked was the first game I bought for my 3DS, so it holds a special place in my heart just for that. And so Atlus, once your done selling Persona 5 again to everyone and after you've released Shin Megami Tensei V, MAKE DEVIL SURIVOR 3!! Hell, I'll settle for a Devil Survivor collection for the Switch at this point, just bring back this series!

Next Time: Wait, is she singing in English?",
