It's a culture of peer pressure, intrusion, and judgement. Within this culture is held the belief that the Internet *deserves* to know everything about you--your politics, your opinions on every controversy, your social views, your religious views, etc.--so that they can judge you for it. Choosing not to post the minutia of your life renders you \"inauthentic,\" which is a most egregious Internet sin. In fact, if you aren't posting in lockstep with every hashtag or campaign or hot social issue, demonstrating what a Goodperson™️ you are, well, according to the dichotomy perpetrated by this culture, you must be a monster.⁠<br />⁠<br />If your performance in the arena isn't satisfactory, you'll get a thumbs-down. If you say the wrong thing--or *don't* say the *right* thing--you'll be excommunicated.⁠<br />⁠<br />It's practically a religion. You're expected to run the gauntlet in order to prove your worthiness. Your goodness. Your purity.⁠<br />⁠<br />But here's the thing, guys: You *don't* have to. You can say no. It's OKAY to keep things to yourself for any reason you feel is valid. The Internet, actually, is NOT entitled to know the nuances of your life and opinions. The pearl-clutching busybodies can suck it.⁠<br />⁠<br />I just wanted to jump on here this weekend to remind you that it's OKAY to be free. To breathe. To shake off the peer pressure and judgement. To relax. Not everything has to be established in an aesthetic square or snap. It's okay to just live.
